How the f... do I............?
How the f... do I keep my visor clear of snow?!!!! Blowing a blizzard - bike at work - no other way to get home [Image: blink.gif] [Image: blink.gif] [Image: blink.gif] Bloody interesting to say the least - really concentrates the mind (and the sphincter [Image: huh.gif] [Image: huh.gif] ). Still..mustn't grumble.
Beware the whitevanman!
Hey Nanook, I hope the weather clears up before August!! Me an the missus are coming up to have a gander around the highlands on our TDM an campin as well! Do we need to prepare for sub-zero conditions or will a 5degree sleeping bag be ok?

Those Vee wipes from Bob Heath or the similar widgets that go on your glove thumb from Heinz Garlick work really well. Helps to have a Fog City on the inside too... B)

Nah - needs more than that mate. Riding in the tracks in the snow made by cars and simultaneously wiping yer visor constantly don't make for relaxed riding I can tell ya!

Gary, yer biggest problem is the vicious little midgie barstewards. Camping will be just hellish and is summat I wouldn't contemplate in August. The little gits are at the apogee of their fury then and DO NOT take prisoners I can tell ya. You'll need to B&B it or go somewhere else if you really wanna camp. [Image: ohmy.gif] [Image: ohmy.gif]

Sounds like I asked the right question!! Having a bit of a rethink. Can you reccomend the best time of the year to camp? We're not that worried if the temp. is a little low, the main thing is to ride and enjoy the scenery, roads etc, I'm keen to ride the A9 and the A90...
Early or late is the secret Gary. I have been a few times in mid September and the lille burgers are a bit less frantic by then. They aren't like any midgies you have ever met.....they don't bother with the preliminary buzzing in yer ear lobes........its.....zapppp straight in for the bite.

The roads and scenery will do more than enough to compensate, specially as you head far North (and left a bit).

Cheers

Hi Gary
Why don't you take yerself and the missus over to France as the ferry is cheap and so is the camping then come up for the Scottish meet in September as Nanook has good ride outs planned which would probably take you several seasons of touring to find.

If you really want to camp and it has to be in the summer then the east coast is where you want to be. Nowhere in mid or west Scotland is midge-free from end of May to end of September. I am not joking when I say the midgies will make your lives an absolute misery if you camp. I don't know if you would be interested but I own a really nice holiday caravan three miles outside Aviemore that I would let you have for a good price for a week. Have a look a www.alvie-estate.com and click on Dalraddy Holiday Park for an idea of what the place looks like. By the way, the A90 is nothing interesting and the A9 will be full of touroids. It also has gatsos up till Pitlochry and police camera vans after that.

Dylan,

Where are you staying cos if I'm able we could meet up for a rideout? Any road around Inverness is great but just watch for camera vans on the A9. A classic ride is from Inverness to Kyle or Ullapool - both are magic. The B851/B862 from Inverness to Fort Augustus has to be ridden to be believed - it's my favourite ride and isn't usually policed. If you do this ride then continue on to Invergarry on the A82 and then turn right on the A87 to a little spot called Bunloyne. Then turn right onto the A887 to Invermoriston then bear left onto the A82 back to Inverness - this is a blinding ride on fantastic roads. May is a magic month with almost 24 hour daylight and, usually, very good weather.

Yes - early May preferably to avoid midges. Though with the late freezes this year the midge larvae may be reduced in number - fingers crossed. [Image: rotflmmfao.gif]

But if you can't make it to Ecosse that early - then the Moray Firth coast east of Inverness - Portsoy and Cullen for example are great in summer. B) AND Midge free . But also mountain free - still beautiful though. [Image: smile.gif]

Thanks for all the info - always a good move doing a bit of research. Looking forward to riding around the Highlands in the summer now...
