Blowing a blizzard - bike at work - no other way to get home Bloody interesting to say the least - really concentrates the mind (and the sphincter ). Still..mustn't grumble. Me an the missus are coming up to have a gander around the highlands on our TDM an campin as well! Do we need to prepare for sub-zero conditions or will a 5degree sleeping bag be ok? Can you reccomend the best time of the year to camp? We're not that worried if the temp. is a little low, the main thing is to ride and enjoy the scenery, roads etc, I'm keen to ride the A9 and the A90... How the f... do I............? - dapleb - 25-03-2006 Early or late is the secret Gary. I have been a few times in mid September and the lille burgers are a bit less frantic by then. They aren't like any midgies you have ever met.....they don't bother with the preliminary buzzing in yer ear lobes........its.....zapppp straight in for the bite. The roads and scenery will do more than enough to compensate, specially as you head far North (and left a bit). Nowhere in mid or west Scotland is midge-free from end of May to end of September. I am not joking when I say the midgies will make your lives an absolute misery if you camp. I don't know if you would be interested but I own a really nice holiday caravan three miles outside Aviemore that I would let you have for a good price for a week. Have a look a www.alvie-estate.com and click on Dalraddy Holiday Park for an idea of what the place looks like. By the way, the A90 is nothing interesting and the A9 will be full of touroids. Though with the late freezes this year the midge larvae may be reduced in number - fingers crossed. But if you can't make it to Ecosse that early - then the Moray Firth coast east of Inverness - Portsoy and Cullen for example are great in summer. B) <b>AND Midge free</b> .
