This is in relation to my XJR but this is still the best forum for useful information and a lack of hysterical replies so I thought I'd start here.

 

I've discovered that the aforementioned XJR has some hidden rust issues on the frame - mainly the rear subframe. The reason is that there are soft foam blocks on the inside of the tail panel that are cleverly designed to hold water against the steel frame and this bike has spent most of it's life on the coast in Torquay.

 

As a temporary fix I've covered the area with ACF50 and my question is whether this would attack the foam?

 

I'm not sure I'm up for a engine removal and powder coat of the frame so this could be a longer term temporary fix.

Probably a very difficult one to answer as it would likely depend on the type of foam, there's lots of different compositions, would it be easy to replace the foam if needed?

Or maybe slide some sort of vinyl protector strip between frame and foam with backing still on but doubled back so you could slide in the peel backing off when in position.

Treat the rust, paint over and allow to dry then use tape over the contact areas before reassembling.

Thanks for the replies - that's made me think that maybe a couple of layers of clingfilm should protect the foam sufficiently, or maybe some vinyl if I can find something suitable.

+1 , here's some closed cell waterproof foam , for flotation devices. I doubt it would hold much liquid, and at 30mm thick you have plenty of meat to carve out the right sort of shape you need

I need to stop me TDM dissolving any further next winter season - think I would need the 5litre tub, bloody expensive though.

They do an Anti Corrosion Treatment costs about £80 using ACF 50 etc they are a Franchise so there should be someone local to you

Even better value if you get it as a Xmas pressie

Yes it's very good, i also use it on my electrics..

I use that scott oil 365, similar stuff but it was cheaper than acf at the time
