renntec sports rack

I've just put on the rack with the original bolts from the grab-rail, as it says in the instructions, but the front ones are too long and the back ones dinnae seem to line up properly. Would I be better off to use shorter bolts, a few washers, or leave it as it is because I'm too lazy to take it off again.........

MKI Renntec engine crash bars & sump guard. engine changed july 20 07 on a dyno run it made 79.1BHP / Torque 59.9Had a brief flirtation with a 1999 MKIIa but it blew an exaust valve on the M5 so was sold on to be repaired. Fitted one to my Mark 1 and no problems with bolt lengths.
