Leather Boots - Waterproofer.

That time of year again that highlights that I haven't kept my boots as sealed as I thought...and the soggy soak (quiet at the back) moment when I get to work.

 

Been doing some reading and this product gets good reviews:

Anyone have any other suggestions on waterproofing products...

Good old fashioned dubbin and nikwax have always served me well

I don't think you will ever make your boots fully waterproof again once they start leaking . However I'm aware that's not very helpful !   I use Nikwax  and wear waterproof socks ( sealskins ) which work for me.

At the NEC show we were persuaded to buy some Renapur. Haven't used them on the bike boots (they're new so it wouldn't matter) but on my work boots and my wife's shoes it seems to be good stuff (thick waxy paste) , and can also work on waxed cotton garments.

 

The problem areas for boots which I have found is in the stitching and joint overlaps, where gaps open up. Pressing plenty of wax (in the past I used Nikwax) into the stitching and seams worked quite well.

 

I tried all sorts of remedies when i worked as a courier including thin carrier bag liners. but the only really good thing i found which could keep me dry for 200 miles on the motorway in sideways rain were cheap nylon overboots like these (many to choose from) .... https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Waterproof-Ra...0005.m1851

 

I could wear the soles through till they were pretty ragged underneath, but because my foot was tilted forward when on the bike the rain didn't travel very far up and underneath

I've only been using polish on mine.  It's not like a leak, just saturation...just need to build the WP layers up again.

 

Dubbin & Nikwax is a good shout

I always use Renapur on mine. It's claimed (by the makers of renapur!) that its a leather conditioner that feeds the leather and keeps it nice and supple as well as waterproof, while Nikwax and Dubbin are waxy/waterproof coatings on the outside of the leather.

Based on that if it's a seam that's leaking I'd use nikwax or dubbin but otherwise use renapur or saddle soap.

Leder-Gris water repellent wax oil from Altbergs is my choice of boot protector.  It's great for reviving tired boots as the oil penetrates the leather, leaving it soft and supple loike what it used to be.  Takes some effort working it in but it's good stuff.

I use a beeswax and paraffin wax mix that I concoct. Worked fine on my recent trips.

I use gliptone liquid leather.

Add to the above a pair of waterproof socks for when the wet gets in.

 

I have some with Gore-Tex or similar that seem to work, but then my boots have GoreTex themselves so maybe not doing much or anything.

 

There are some available - no experience - that claim to keep your feet dry even standing in a bowl of water. IIRC Aldi had them recently.

 

Go search. I suggest you start with outdoor kit suppliers.

 

Also have spare socks sitting on the radiator at work waiting for you to arrive!

 

Until you find socks, howzabout a plastic bag over your sock?

Renapur is my current choice. I have tried most of them over the years. I wear Altberg boots which I treat with Leder Gris after a good clean then Renapur as a top up. Works fine but one boot still lets a little bit in after time in heavy rain.

Altbergs were ten year old before they started to leak so cant complain. Just replaced them with another pair.

For winter dry feet & 100s of motorway miles I've never had any leather kit that was waterproof for more than a little drizzle unless it had a built in goretex liner (SIDI)..............sooo

 

If doing lots o miles day in day out  - Replace with wellies = cheaper than leather waterproofer (aka snake oil Mk2 right up there with ciggies buy it , make it disappear and buy some more..now where's that pot of manufactures glee.........). 

 

Buy goretex boot liners but wellies are even cheaper

 

Buy Goretex boots (not shite Dainese colanders tho = my EU summer boots) wellies are cheaper

 

Don't buy rigger wellies/safety wellies buy cheap cheap wellies available in a range of colours including manly black........wellies, like waterlogged leather boots, are not warm, so spend some of the savings on cashmere socks mmm toastie got mine on right now.......

Splitters me n me  pals used to call em & they split in the same sort of time as much cheaper wellies. They are a better feel/fit & they are warmer than wellies tho

EDIT Derri split when you do stuff like squat to check chain etc.

What about over-boots for those downpours. My Austrian Para boots have kept the water out so far, even in heavy rain. And at £35 they're a lot cheaper than Altberg and a very substantial boot. But there's nothing worse than wet, cold feets, so I'll probably get over-boots at some point.

Snoseal is the dogs!!!!!! been using it for 2 years now, warm the boots up with a hot air gun first and rub it in! That deal is a lot cheaper than my first order!....So I've just bought a tub again.....Cheers dmmsta :good:
