Back Rests
My wife has recentley voiced an interest on becoming a passeger on my bike, however she has arthritis in her spine and a few other major joints. To make her as comfy as possible I want to put a back rest on the bike.

I've looked at the back rests on the Givi range etc and they do not look they give that much cushioning. I do not want to change bikes if I can help it, (the amount of money I've spent on the bloody thing has seen to that!!!) Does anyone have any suggestions regarding this.
My body is a temple, that's why my shoes are on the outside.....

my suggestion would be , get a cheap topbox and fitting kit. then visit a local furniture upholsterer etc and ask them to make a custom pad to bolt on both the top lid of the box and the lower part of the box.

have seen a bike with this arrangment for another artritus sufferer, the gentleman had actually made the pads himself out of plywood, foam and a suitable vinyl covering. and very smart it looked, he even sculpted it like a recaro seat so it gave latteral support as well. [Image: rolleyes.gif]

Hi Gibbo, My otherhalf has the same medical probs,i allways run with a topbox on so what i did was looked around and found in tesco(car section) a wrapround velcroed paded shoulder rest for seatbelts( two thicknesses), if you get some velcro stripps to match the ones on the shoulder rest and mount them on the front of the t/box wow! [Image: yahoo.gif] instant, safe and cheap back support for pilion [Image: good.gif] ..hope this helps
TDMalcolm
if you do not want to have a top box, there are quite a lot of HARLEY or HARLEY type custom cruiser 'sissy bars' on ebay which are quite a simple design but you would need to make some bracketry to fit it either to your rack or to where the rack would bolt to if you remove it, some also come with a rack anyway, and if you do not want to buy one, just looking at them may give you an idea on how to make your own, on ebay search for 'back rest' and 'sissybar' or 'sissy bar', if you want a really large one then check out the ones they sell for VESPA's and LAMBRETTA's.
it's not my time to go, it's not my time to die
the last thing I want is for my family to cry
Possible to rig up something with the mounting bracket for one of these?

GIVI have two "pillows" for their e46 or Maxia. Of course, one is a smaller, cheaper (cca 30 euros) and harder, the second one cost around 50 euros. I recomendend the second one.
A more expensive, but also more comfy solution would be to fit a corbin seat.

The backrest comes as an extra part.

See CORBIN

Price for just the seat is around $300.
Too Freud to rock'n'roll, too Jung to die.
that seat looks really neat.

corbin seats are really nice had a gunfighter and lady on my cbr 600 it takes a while for the foam to conform to your arse but when it does its really comfy indeed.

only prob is they are fairly expensive over here [Image: sad.gif]
