For the past few years the state of UK (non-trunk) roads has really annoyed me. The level of maintenance is inadequate and at some point many roads will become dangerous, and eventually, un-usable for a typical vehicle.
On Sunday evening I had the misfortune of driving my car into a pothole on an A-Road and suffering a punctured tyre. Thankfully the wheel was un-damaged.
-Before anybody criticises me, it was a major A road, I was driving at ~20mph (slowing for a junction), it was wet, the hole was in shadow and it was only illuminated by the headlamps when I was too close to it to stop.
It would appear that <b>every council has an address to report potholes</b>. It is important that people do report them rather than just grumble as I have done for years. I'm going to make it my mission to report the holes in my local area.

According to the regional news last night, councils spend more on compensation than they do on pothole repair. If there was a bit of long-term thinking applied, then it would make more sense to invest heavily in road re-surfacing now and save a large amount of compensation in future years.
Repairing holes BEFORE they become big should be the policy, not waiting until the holes are large enough to cause damage.
Trunk roads and Motorways are generally well-surfaced.
