France Introduces Breathalyser Law

At least, they are not expensive..

Every motorist travelling through France is expected to carry the breathalyser kits, according to new legislation [AFP]

A new motoring law has come into effect in France, whereby it will be compulsory for drivers to carry breathalyser kits in their vehicles.

From Sunday, motorists and motorcyclists risk facing an on-the-spot fine unless they travel with two single-use devices.

The law is part of a government initiative to reduce the figures of drink-driving related fatalities.

The new regulations, which exclude mopeds, will be fully enforced and include foreign drivers from November 1, following a four-month grace period. Anyone failing to produce a breathalyser after that date will receive an 11 euro fine.

French police have warned they will be carrying out random checks on drivers crossing into France via ferries and through the Channel Tunnel to enforce the new rules.

According to French media reports, alcohol is responsible for at least 30 per cent of fatal accidents in the country.

Ethylotest obligatoire, the French website informing the public on the new legislation, reported that by the end of June, only 37 per cent of French citizens had bought breathalysers.

The breathalysers are currently priced between one euro and 1.5 euros.

How does this support non drink driving?
Don't all people who drive when their drunk or have been drinking know that they have just been drinking??? we know the limit that are inforce.
And i would like to here the phone call when you ring work the next day saying your going to be late because you are still technically drunk.

Just a money grab that will inspire the rest of the other EU politicall ilk to introduce it.
It takes Two to Lie Marge, One to Lie and One to Listen
As far as I know, in France (and Spain) the limit is 0,5 mg/ml vs 0,8 mg/ml for the UK, so the "reasoning' for this is that YOU will be able to know if you are over the limit BEFORE been pull over.. in short, now there is no excuse for you to NOT know you can get a ticket... in a way, make sense.. beside, the ones making money are the labs that make the gadget, you can actually save money by not getting a very expensive fine by using a 1,5 euro gadget, wonder if you can use them more than once..?

Here is the actual law on this piece of crappy law - mine translates instantly to English using google translate auto. Anyway the requirement is for ONE NF spec breathalyser although two are recommended (simply in case you do actually decide to use one).

They are one shot test kits which have a shelf life of 2 years - an out of date bit of kit is not acceptable nor are non NF spec jobbies.

The way to look at this is simply that it is another bit of kit the French require - the fine is 11 Euros if you don't have one after 1st Nov and only about 40% French motorists currently have them.

There are two main suppliers in the UK and the kit can be purchased at Halfords, The Tunnel or ports - I see in The Sun yesterday that they were telling all that two were required (double profit)
