I decided to the 900 needed an oil change, while it's been over a year since the last I hadn't done many miles so kept putting it off until today.

I found I still had an OEM filter and O ring in my stores so set about a task I had done many times before in my 17 year history of 900 ownership - when commuting and racking up the miles I used to change the oil every 3000 miles. I'd left the last change to a local mechanic as I got him to do a few tasks outside my confidence level such as valves and fork rebuild.

So I warmed her up and checked the oil level before removing the drain plug and filter housing and gave the oil plenty of time to drain. Came back after lunch refitted plug and new filter and measured out 3 litres of oil per the factory service manual, which I referred to as it had been nearly three years since I'd done my last.

Half way through topping up I wondered what the dripping noise was and noticed fresh oil pouring down the side of the engine. That's strange. So I then measured the amount of oil that had drained out - just under 2 litres?

So I double checked the instructions, yes 3 litres then run it and top up to the line just as I remembered. Baffled, I thought I'd fall back on good old Carpe and search for similar experiences on there - was this a common problem with high mileage, had I got a blockage somewhere? I could find mention of a second drain bolt on 850s but no mention of one on a niner. At this point I found myself staring at my parts box and my stock of washers for the oil change, large aluminium and smaller copper ones...................

I then read the instructions again and this time noticed it mentioned a second drain plug for the oil tank.

How did I forget this and more importantly miss the line in the instructions that I read many times? Should I hang up my spanners or just get my eyes tested?

At least I didn't post a question on here asking if anyone else had experienced similar - that would have been embarrasing!

I read the first sentence and assumed it was the collar on the oil filter housing ewe had lost/forgotten.
A very wise engineer once told me that you have to be most alert to errors on the tasks that become second nature...... You stop reading line by line and rely on recall.
I had also forgotten about the second drain plug.... So thanks for the timely reminder but sorry for your pain!
Doin valve clearances? Use dappers valve shim exchange program and the job will be carroty - Free (other than you postin me yer shims) for sporting members.
great story and a good reminder for me , I've got a lot to re-learn about the TDM900, I can't even remember how some of the parts I made come off :rotflmmfao:

This harks back to why even the most experienced pilots still use a checklist. I have to admit with embarrasment that I once forgot to put back the drain plug back on the car while doing an oil change because I was distracted by my female next door neighbour. It wasn't until I saw a puddle coming out from under the car that I realised. If I could find a photo of my neighbour, you'd all understand...
I have many checklists and reminder cards these days. I was lucky to escape disaster once when the service engineer had not tightened up the drain plug on my car. Unbeknown to me, I had been dripping oil down the motorway until the warning light immediately before South Mimms stop. Having parked (a risk in itself), I found there was no plug at all... Phew!

What was it a puddle of?
