Ive been a busy boy in preparation for my Spain trip.

Since the brake seals were approaching 23 years old, I treated it to a full set of seals front and rear including master cylinders

Caliper pistons were fine as they were made stainless years ago..

After the usual bleeding nightmare on the front the solution was cable tie lever to bar overnight.

Other jobs were fork oil and suspension grease and go through all the electrics.

Went for test ride and it rides like a new one.
Brilliant.
Doin valve clearances? Use dappers valve shim exchange program and the job will be carroty - Free (other than you postin me yer shims) for sporting members.

I've found that if I have trouble bleeding the front brakes on a double set up, I sit one of the calipers higher than the master cylinder and bleed the lower one first, the air goes to the upper line and fluid to the lower line, when fluid comes out of the lower line the other one can be bled quite easily while it is still higher than the master cylinder, air wants to rise up in fluid so it's easy to chase it out while it's up, works for me anyway  Lol

 

thinking about it maybe it will work even easier if both calipers are higher than the master cylinder, I'll try it next time  Wink

That is a piece of advice I wished I'd had 2 years ago. Simple, logical and effective!

It was a shame that I was simple, not logical and ineffective when I tried to do my ABS bike and had to send it to a (robbing) professional.

Next time I'll try this.

If you have one if the pela type vacuum oil extractors they can make bleeding easy, I use one for bleeding the diesel system on my boat after filter changes and it's so much quicker than messing about with the little lever on the fuel pump and the mess is self cleaning, just do it slowly and watch the fluid level in the mc.

Once fluid appears in the suction tube it's pretty much done.

Bikes barely touch the surface compared to boats, this autumn I've had a lift out for full survey with boat safety check at the same time, while out replaced a shaft, all shaft bearings, converted the old stuffing glands for modern dripless lip seals and changed anodes and anti-foul, the gland conversion was experimental so made up as I went along.

I think it's over £3k so far, boaty forum thread below if you need some winter reading.

Thats it Im sticking with bikes much easier to deal with. Ive repaired a few lister twins in canal boats in my time.

Old boats had lots of nice brass fittings.
And that's without mentioning the other shaft I replaced in 2017 (was only £450 then, now £620) and the fuel tanks that got replaced around the same time (£1500 for the tanks) but the engines had to come out to get the tanks in/out so that adds the use of a crane as they have to come out through the sunroof (with 1" to spare) and weigh just shy of 500kg each with the gearboxes attached, the new stainless water tank, oh and a new calorifier pushing £600, and I'd rather replace a TDM battery at 10Ah than my 4x 110Ah things.

Then there's the 50 litres of diesel an hour @ 16-18 knots, ok on rivers at low speed but soon rattles through a few hundred quid for a sea trip, I never worry about MPG on the TDM.

And heres me questioning if I actually need three bikes due to costs.
As a colleague of mine who is into boating says (he's an ex pilot too)...

If it floats, flies, or F...s , It's cheaper to rent than to buy !

 

But as far as biking is concerned, the TDM has proved to be very cheap to me, and looking on FaceAche Marketplace at the moment, there's some amazing bargains of all sorts of motorcycles. 180mph is achievable for £1000, but better check it over first before trying ! ("Just needs carbs cleaning" - is an excuse for all sorts of failings !)
