1977 Honda Cb550 A Tale Of Lies, Engineering Incompetence And Fraud.
I agree, it's like polishing a turd.
Well underpowered and clumsy, as I remember that CB. A 400 with a 250 engine. Girlfriend had one and was only too keen to swap bikes on any occations.

Not sure what became of either of them?!

Rob
I had what I thought was a nice CB250N as a runabout at one time in the early 80s, I picked it up really cheaply. It never let me down in many miles over the year or so I had it. When I came to sell it, a guy turned up to look at it and spotted a rear shock was leaking Huh , so didn't want to test ride it and was not a happy bunny :dunno: . After a couple of weeks I got a 2nd hand shock from the breakers, fitted it and it wouldn't start. Battery was bu**ered Rolleyes . Fitted a new battery, spun but wouldn't start. CDI had failed, apparently they don't like flat batteries Confusedorry: . Took it to a guy who reckoned he could fix the CDI and while he had the tank off, he noticed a crack in the frame around the headstock  . I ended up scrapping it for about £50. Now I know why I got it so cheap  :rotflmmfao:

Just as an update to this, I have just found out Peter Thorne is now in prison for fleecing an elderly relative with dementia out of £150,000. What a piece of work. If you’re interested it’s on the Oxford Mail website. Bang goes my small claims case, but I got my bike back, I’m sure plenty haven’t!

That is the lowest of the low.  What a nasty person he is.
He's in jail with no bail, that's how this sad story ends.

Personally, I think he should have been given four horses Roman justice. Sorry Chris, no point in suing people with no money, proceeds of crime act means Government takes all if they can find it.

This doing up old bikes pox is catching, particularly middle aged men.[/quote]

Oh dear, no going back Lee. I got the bug back in the nineties. Restored four so far from the bare frame up. Proud to say to your own standard. Absolutely zero profit in it if done properly though. Ended up keeping two anyway.

As for Thorne and the like.......Cole and the other fella seem to me to have a hammer and pliers fettling mentality.......nice one helping out Smile
Sure I read somewhere that he wasn't available for a while as he was on holiday at her majesty's pleasure
Well here we are a couple of years on, been through Covid (although I didnt catch it) , moving house twice (due to having extensive building work done) the hottest weather forever etc etc and Ive finally managed to get the Honda on the road. Its got an issue with a dodgy connection in the ignition and a very erratic tick over but Ive finally been able to ride it, and apparently thats what it needs, would I do all this again? Probably not, its cost too much and at the end of the day is just a 46 year old unremarkable Honda that I might be able to sell for (hopefully) somewhere near what its cost me.(again probably not!)

Ive just taken it out for another spin and realised I was riding it like a Tdm, then I noticed the red line at 9000 plus - I wonder.

Whoa ! There you go! Fast little thing, but how come we didnt need brakes in the seventies? I even needed to start using the back brake again, havent done that for 13 years!
Don’t ask - iPhone!

I've been working on a few oldies myself and it's surprising what's still available but the cost isn't.
