Touchdown, Or The Lack Of.
Odd question but does anyone here get the pegs on their 9'er to touch down easily enough?

I'm by no means a balls out racer but I do like the twisties and am quite intrigued by the lack of "chicken strips" for lack of a less stomach churningly lame expression, on my back tyre.

I've got barely a couple of mm before there is no more room for error but I've never got the pegs down once.

Any bikes I've had in the past have always had a bit more fresh rubber on show for the ladies.

Tyres fitted are both the correct size for bike Bridgestone T31's

No complaints here, I love the way this bike handles, I just don't want to go too far and was wondering if my pegs should be giving me any warning yet? Doesn't look like they have been raised in any way.

I'd read a review on the TDM before I bought one and that guys was saying the pegs touch down far too early...I take everything with a pinch of salt though!

The answer kind of depends what year your bike is. The earlier models up to about 2006/7 had shorter hero blobs on the pegs. You can still get them to ground out though  Smile  The longer ones on the later bikes obviously ground out a little earlier.

That said, you can get to the edge of the tyre without them grounding out, although I guess that may be somewhat tyre make dependent.

I've got a 2003 model. I guess I'm just not used to being so close to the edge of the rubber and have the fear that if I go any further then it might be a step too far! Might book myself on a novice track day to find out somewhere made for it!
08 900

T32s

Nitron

Jacked up for 34" inside leg and size 12 feet  - I be on balls of my Altbergs standing/sitting still

Yamaha mainstand & longer hero blobs fitted cos of the stand

Rear tyre wears edge to edge & feather up nicely well before blob contact

Blob touchdown can occur without running out of tyre (on mine) including on mildly negative camber R corners

Blob touchdown is fairly rare the way I have the bike set and ride.

Probably no help at all really Lol Enjoy :good:

Lol.

I've been stripless on my Mkii for a few years now after getting into motogymkhana and improving my riding ability.

The only time i've had a peg down is when I've hit a compression in the middle of a corner which has compressed the suspenders. Brief and painless. I did scrape my boots a lot until i started riding on the balls of my feet when overcome with a burst of chicanery enthusiasm.

As stated, I guess it depends on the tyres. Conti's I had on would feel like they stopped leaning when I got to the edge of the tyre which was weird. Bridgestones just keep going. They have excellent edge grip IMHO and the contact patch is still pretty big when you get to the edge. Plus it's a soft compound.

Front and rear are rock solid at full lock and full lean doing motogymkhana, no strips on the front either... I suspect this is a lot more aggressive than what the tyres are put through on the road,

I have no interest in going any further to make sparks, somehow my rectal gyroscope calls time when I get to the edge.

Bizarrely, after all the training and practice I ride slower but much smoother and it takes less time to cover the ground.

The bikes are very well designed, I wouldn't worry about it. Their is no thread I'm aware of complaining about lack of clearance or regularly sliding off into a hedge.

"Rectal gyroscope"  :rotflmmfao:

I sincerely hope it's not battery powered!  :rotflmmfao:

I suppose some of it depends on the ride height you have set with the spring adjusting spanner at the rear.

<p style="text-align:center;">Ohlins, PC3, fuel cut defeat, +4deg timing, 17" front wheel.
No chicken strips on mine and never had the pegs touch. Not missing it either. Might be due to the dog bones jacking up the rear a touch.
Tyres are worn edge to edge on the 900 but I have only ground the pegs once.  An unmarked corner tightened up very quickly, all I could do was push the inside bar until I saw the exit.  Hero blobs ground for a while through the corner.  Instinct and the bikes handling saved me. The rider behind was amazed I got so low and came out of it. Apparently he was screaming across the intercom.

That's me Big Grin nearly binned it after my first hour on Spanish tarmac. I'd fitted longer dog bones and hadn't stiffened the suspension, also fully loaded. It was the bracket on my exhaust that caught the tarmac, thought I was gonna highside. How now brown trou. lol  Doddy behind me was quite impressed with the sparkly display.

Yeah I really love the feel of the Bridgestones, grippy and lively. Hagon shock is floating my boat too.

Good to know I can lean a bit further without the world ending and am just overthinking things as usual 😂

That was my second 'event' running wide on a left turn and soooo grateful there was a gravel run off to peddle my way over. Lol  Yeah, you seem to save all yer little 'events' for one bigger one.  Tongue
