Emulsion Tubes.....again!
Hi gents

I've been reading old posts on here about this. I've got a 2000 reg ( late 1999 manufactured) 4TX. Had issues with running rich and smelling when left unused. I'm no mechanic so had carbs cleaned and balanced by local garage (used previously and reliable). Mixture now better but it still smells if left for more than 24 hrs.Using the tap tucked up under the tank is a pain long term and means leaving side panel off.

Is this an emulsion tube problem? I read that later bikes had tubes which can't be easily removed. Any suggestions please? If it is do-able what do I need and from where? Thanks very much. Mileage 28k and well maintained.
If it smells of fuel when parked and not running more likely to be a leaking float valve or if a full tank just from the vent pipe, mixture issues will only smell when running and will be from the exhaust.

Apparently the tubes on those 4TX4 bikes can now be pressed out and replaced. I suspect it's actually leaking a bit of fuel though.

Thank you for replies. All helpful.

No signs of fuel coming off the bottom of the carbs ? :unsure2:  Just wondering if the float bowl has a crack in it.
The MK2a is much less prone to toob issues AFAIK due to the springs that hold the needles straight instead of rattling around in the toobs.

👍👍No signs of fuel anywhere as far as I can tell but nothing removed at mo. No drips/puddles. Amount of fuel in tank makes no difference. Smell most noticeable close to breather pipes but enough to notice from several feet away when the garage has been shut overnight.
Have you checked the tank underneath ie no pinholes or is the tap under the tank leak tight ??? frustrating eh. Fuel lines not sweating, be careful with the fuel lines i had some on a year which were buggered with E10, admittedly they were cheap but oem fuel lines seem to hold up well.

Just another one to think of, how does your oil smell?

My MK1 would hydraulic on the fuel going through the carbs when trying to start after sitting a few days. Petrol was slowly going past the carb needle valves, through to the combustion chambers and into the oil.

I turned the pet cock off every time till it was sorted.

good tip there,  this can actually happen to the last of the 850's with the electric fuel pump.  Check the oil level ta see if it has increased

Thanks all. Good suggestions. I'll continue to investigate.
