I'm Starting To See The Attraction Of The Mk1
I like my Niner I really do, but having ridden a 360 twin engine in the trumpet I can see the attraction of the even firing order of the Mk1.
Must confess I too liked my 3VD for that reason. But crap carbs and it felt very heavy in comparison, I'll stick with the 9er.

Glad you're liking the bike Lee. :good:

It's actually a 180 motor in the mk1, but who's counting. Smile

Anyhoo, fit mk2a carbs and they can run really smooth, better than the 9'er imho. The 9'er does feel lighter though, even though it's a heavier bike than the mk1, might be related to the angle of the motor, oil tank position and/or the tyres perhaps ?

I thought the 9er is 10kg lighter? Or, rather, 9?

And isn't the Mk1 360deg, as it has only 1 coil?
Bjørge
I thought mk 1 is 360 in that both pistons rise and fall together ?
It's a 360 isn't it? Both go up and down together but alternate one fires on each revolution, hence the single coil and wasted spark.

I always felt the Mk1 was better on twisty B roads than the 900, with better low RPM response for powering out of slow corners. The 900s better on faster roads though. They benefit from heavier fork oil in my opinion (especially as TDM owners like cake) and anything on it's original shock is probably a bit bouncy by now.

Oooops,my bad. Dunno where that thought came from. Wet weight and the mk1 is lighter, dry weight the non-abs 9'er is lighter.
FWIW, mention of the angle of the motor reminds me that they have set the engine more vertical in the latest MT-09,.

Took me a while. MK2 for a long time... then a week of testing a 9er....hmmm.. back on the MK2...then MK2 and MK1 for a while...and finally I worked it out. MK1 ever since. ʕっᴥʔっ

Found on the interweb on TDM850:

Dry Weight

201kg / 449.7 lbs

Wet Weight

220 kg / 485.0 lbs

....this is obviously wrong, as Fuel+oil+coolant is far more than 19kg. I think 230kg wet is more correct.
Bjørge
19 kg is abought right for 18 liters of fuel, 4.2 of oil and 1.7 of coolant, which I think re the book figures.

You're right! Didn't think of how much lighter petrol and oil is compared to water... But why would it be (much!) more on a 9er?
Bjørge
20 liter fuel, 3.9 litres oil and 2 liters coolant from a quick google search, which I make about 1.5kg heavier, so not much in it.

Yeah, so wet weight should be some 211kgs
Bjørge
It'd weigh more if you put litres in it as there's more of 'em than gallons. Tongue

tbh I've allus felt the mk1 to be heavier when shuffling it about and at low speed, compared to the 9'er.

It definately feels heavier, and also has a tendency of falling into tight curves. Need to push it to upright after e.g. a roundabout. A bit like when head bearings are too tight...
