Ahhh ha - when bleeding the system yesterday I noticed the upper pipe was actually pumping coolant in to the radiator . Never twigged on it was wrong way around. This must be the problem as to why the fan is not cutting in. Going to have to find some in line reducer/ expanding couplings to sort pipe work due to spigot wrong way around.

I think the fan switch is up with the thermostat body, in the pipework above the rocker cover (below the fuel tank). A shortage of water could mean the fan switch isn't being bathed with coolant. Eventually it probably should still kick in because of the heat from the steam, but I think that direct contact with liquid coolant still works better.

 

The water for the cold start mechanism is plumbed into the lower of the two radiator spigots you already identiified.

That was it just swapped them over and fan cut straight in when towards the red - ran it nearly a full year with pipes around the wrong way - Holy shit what a spanner

It is not an uncommon problem. Also, they do get quite hot before the fan kicks in but yours is working now, so that's a result.

2012 900 - Still adding shiny bits. Was black, changed to white and now back to black again.

My suggestion to just fill the rad and system, in post #2, was aimed at making sure the senders for temp and fan were covered with water. Low water level led to a lot of work on a mini yeeeeears ago. Best lessons are the painful/embarrassing ones!!
