Northern Italy
I'm contemplating a solo trip in Europe this summer.  I would like to ride from the west of France to southern Germany, cross Austria and ride across northern Italy back to France.

However, I'm a total paranoiac !  And I keep hearing horror stories about flocks of thieves descending on tourists particularly in northern Italy.  One family I know had the interior of their camping car stripped out while they ate lunch in a resaurant and another friend of mine had his luggage stolen from the boot of his BMW 5er while it was in the hotel car park.....they even stole the bloody boot lid !

So, I'm too soft to camp and I'll need a night in a hotel in Italy.  Do you think it would be possible to find a hotel that would let me keep my TDM in my room ?

Any further security tips from you guys ?   My luggage and personal stuff I can take care of, my main concern is waking up and finding my TDM is gone !

Thanks in anticipation.

Lots of hotels will have secure underground parking, esp. in, or near, to cities.  We used one in France, business style hotel and also used one near the top of the Col du Tormalet when we stayed at a Ski Resort off-season.  Might cost a euro or two extra though but well worth it.

Also, I reckon you'll be pretty safe with a low value bike. Big Grin

What do you mean, Low Value, Studley ?  This bike is more valuable to me than …… well, I'd better not list them, this PC is not really secure....

All joking aside, that's a good point. I won't book a place unless it offers garaging facilities.

In all the years i lived/travelled abroad i have never had an issue, not to say they dont happen of course, but i also avoid cities which is where your probably likely to encounter the issue, i've taken locking devices and never ended up using them, still pays to be cautious eh.

You could purchase summit like this as an extra precaution if your so inclined and alleviate some worry, would'nt want my bike knicked regardless if it's an oldie or new :good:

The current country tells you how risky the next country is and that they wouldn't take a boike there.....rinse and repeat.

Doin valve clearances? Use dappers valve shim exchange program and the job will be carroty - Free (other than you postin me yer shims) for sporting members.
A few mates have been down here in Spain three times and so far, touch wood, never had a problem  We always book a hotel with a patio or somewhere to park the bikes securely overnight. Most are happy to help.  As long as you dont leave gps's, etc on the bike i'd say you'd be alright. We're planning a French tour for next year so I might ask you nearer the time for some ;places to stay/visit.. Smile

Never a flicker of trouble since anywhere in Europe inc. non EEC............ I may have been a bit cross if I'd caught the shopfitter guy in Krakow who covered my bike in UPVC chippings  (think stuck to the engine & header pipes - had to pick em all off before starting the bike).
