Thanks Tam.
I know I know use the f@@kin search function. Well I did and I couldn't find the answer...

So I follow the how to check the oil thread and I normally check the oil as soon as I get back from work ( 30 mile ride) but today I just warmed it up at idle for 15 mins and checked and it needed 300cc top up. That niggled me all the way home - doesn't normally use anything like that so I checked again after riding home and now its overfull by about 200cc I rekon :/

Which reading is correct? Somewhere in the middle probably...

Best to check oil level after a run really, gives the gearbox time to warm up too. Also worth waiting a few mins after you stop before checking the level. Smile

Check my Mk1 when cold on the side stand as long as it shows on the stick no problems will be at max or very close when I get back :good:

I check it every other day when I'm using it regularly. If stood for a while, always run it up, leave it for a few mins, and check with the bike standing upright.

I check with the dipstick resting on the thread, and make sure the oil level is a sniff below the 'F' to allow for when the dipstick is fully screwed in. Haven't gone wrong so far, because I check it regularly. My TDM like many others uses more oil than the Exxon Valdez.

Ive learned something here ,Theres a bolt to empty the sight glass????

Can you get the barrells of an 850 ceramic coated? Has anyone done it?
For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
Nope. Smile  Ceramisizerers can only ceramisoize alloy components.  Charlie sent his barrels and pistons off to ceramisizerers and only the pistons were done. He also never rebuilt the engine so don't know if it helped or not.
Ahh good to know...I knew someone else must have already thought of it Tongue

sorry posted in wrong bit

Resurrecting old thread alert !

My son has a Mk2 oil drinker. He checks the oil after a run, bike on the centre stand but leaves the engine running.

I said that he should switch it off for a minute or two before checking , but strictly speaking the extract from the

service manual earlier in this thread says nothing about either stopping the engine or checking while it is still running.

Any thoughts ?

How ya, the enjun must be switched off to check the oil level accurately as the oil will still be circulating when it's idling.  I usually ride the bike a mile or 2 to warm it up then switch it off and sit for 5 or 10 mins afore checking.

It says "after idling" by that it means its no longer idling as in stopped but it doesn't actually spell that out.

Levelness is the key, wouldn't have thought that likely on a centre stand.

No need to wait for oubt once stopped. Waiting is just undoing the last 15mins of warming efforts.

you need to wait a minute or two to let the oil settle mind you the time taken to use the dip stick or get down to use the sight glass will be enough if the oil is warm

Hi all not sure its the right topic , as Im new but hear goes

Just brought a R reg tdm 850 its been sat a while, but I cleaned the carbs and dropped the oil ,

Took out 2half L Ish , I put it straight back in via the filler neck on right hand side just below the frame ,

I ran the bike for a couple of minutes, but sounds ruff so I removed the sump plug again , but no oil came out , but the viewing window says half full ? Any ideas as I dont want to run the engine with no oil in the bottom end . Thanks in advance

There are 2 drain plugs. Is the oil filter in the correct way?
