Stop What Have You Done
Quote:I agree with you Grumpychap.....

The paradox is this - if there was no "what have you done", would the contributors have bothered to start a whole new thread ?

Imagine 50 threads all titled "I fitted stainless bolts today...."   not likely to happen is it ?

Peeps seemed to do just fine posting up topics before the What ya done topic existed, and the site was a lot busier.  If they're too idle to start a new topic, surely they're gonna be too idle to put up a post.  I mean, it's not exactly time consuming is it ?

Members with similar info would contribute to the topic.

A topic containing 121 pages of 'stuff' isn't valuable to this site, it's basically the equivalent of a twatter feed.  Read once then forgotten forever. When it comes to wanting, then finding, specific info ie the valuable stuff, and a lot of peeps join us for that very reason, they're not gonna trawl through mahoosive topics reading every relevant post.  Takes too long and would put most peeps off looking.

I agree.

The point is this.

The "What Have" thread, is what it is.

It isn't harmful, it doesn't distract, it even helps attract the everyday bullshit away from the "MEANINGFUL/SEARCHABLE/INFORMATIVE" content jizz, that is so important.

If you are "forum lost", it is because you are looking in the wrong place and are most likely clueless, in ways that I can't even stretch to accommodate.

A convoluted argument is being used, that even I can't un-convolute, to then make a decent point.

If you "of concerned bent", actually care, you will see that you have all made the above points yourselves, just from the position and languages of your own mindsets.

Bottom line - It would be a loss to the forum and a red flag, if the "What Have You" thread was closed.

Might as well as start a "Today, I Have Mostly............" thread, for what it is worth.

Fine if that's your opinion, but if you think it's more than your opinion and that you actually know what everyone else should do and what they should prefer why not try to write out a full and final list of topics, so that we can all benefit ?  Waiting

Why not move it to it's own Sub, and call it the Shout Box - then it becomes what it is - a "shout out" therad.

You could even lock the Sub down so no new threads are started, and it just contains the What Have You thread.

Now to what bothers me about this thread and some of late - manners!

Everyone is entitled to their own view / comment / whatever, but have the savility, and adultness to express them in a way you would expect to be spoken to.

Those that admin Carpe do so with no remuneration other than Carpe itself.  We are all equals here, with some taking their own time to keep this place going from a systematic perspective, and a sterling job they've done/are doing.

Couldn't agree more! Civility costs nothing.

Calling contributors and / or administrators 'Natzis' and such like is not on. The Natzis were a bunch of lying, thieving, vicious, murderous thugs who committed acts of unspeakable disgust, the consequences of which still blight many millions of lives throughout Europe and beyond. It is not a term to be bandied about lightly, and certainly has no place here.

So where is the civility here?

How about first
  • I perceive a problem
  • A discussion
  • Does anyone else agree with me
  • Are there downsides
  • What would be a sensible solution
Instead of
  • This. You must comply!
Already, I sense you understand my point.
  • Pot. Kettle. Black

I disagree, I refer to this topic as proof of that.

Just to be clear and to avoid any possible confusion, of course it's my opinion.
Studley......what are proposing as a perceivably better alternative ?
<p style="text-align:center;">Ohlins, PC3, fuel cut defeat, +4deg timing, 17" front wheel.

.......out of interest, and since I have suffered frustration in this way recently (see posts), is the implication that certain topics,

if contained within the 'what have you done....' discussion, are not locate-able by the search facility?

If so, that seems a persuasive argument for changing matters, either modding the search facility if poss. or discouraging

the 'what have you done...' slot

If the search facility is not negated in that case, then I find many of the above arguments to be equally persuasive

(except the notably aggressive and authoratarian ones) and I have vacillated, between the points of view.......

but have to acknowledge that I am not attracted by the notion of wading through 121 ++ pages of miiscelaneous

chatter to locate a particular tiny gem .

I'd rather be able to focus on THAT topic......identifiable by its title.........though maybe 'miscelaneous chatter'

could remain available for those in need of untargeted distraction

my pennyworth.......with respect to all.......Jiff

......maybe an even handed solution would be the introduction of a prominently displayed encouragement from admin.

to start a new topic where the instigator might feel that the content is more than just a passing snippet?

jiff.
It remains the most popular thread by a long way, with 73,000 views

http://www.carpe-tdm.net/ipb/index.php?showforum=11

I say fix the search system...it is clunky, asthmatic, lacks a bit of smartness.......

Search function code in many programming languages is freely downloadable from a lot of sources....access to the whole message base is the only requirement for effective predictive and 'similar hit' type of searches to be successful
