900 Shock Rebuild By Dunfermline Motorcycles
After dropping my shock off on Monday afternoon I had a call this morning to say it was ready ( 2 days later.)

The diagnosis was the main bush had all the PTFE worn off, down to the brass, which in turn made the oil black because it oxidises. There was very little gas pressure and the oil level was low. The main piston rod seal was still serviceable and the piston rod is still bright and not corroded.

It feels so much better now, definitely won't be a problem for next month's MOT

DM are an 'old school' type place with a healthy motorcross side to the business from the looks of it. They had  shocks on the bench from Orkney, Shetland and other far off places , all for rebuilding, their reputation is excellent

Cost to strip, replace the bush, clean, refill and regas it.... £86 (the bush was £6 of that)

The only problem can come if the piston rod oil seal fails, because they're not a part you can order.....in which case I'm assured they'll rework the bottom cap to take a heavy duty motorcross seal.

They keep chrome rod in stock for making new piston rods, and regularly work on 1950's and 1960's off road bikes as well as modern stuff

Cheaper than a new one!

Yup. I did ask them to call me if they thought they were going to start racking up a big bill, then I might have gone for a replacement in the 250-350 range, but pennies are tight just after Christmas.

this should keep me going a while

Dunfermline M/c's fitted a new Ohlins gas valve, a new gas refilling valve (by drilling the body !), fitted Ohlins seals and a new heavy duty CRF450 rose joint for the swingarm linkage

A proper old school m/c shop, they get shocks shocks sent to them from all over the place. Almost any shock can be rebuilt by them, they turn bushes on lathes and make new piston rods from chrome rod, as required, specialising mostly in high performance motorcross equipment but they're tooled up and skilled enough to cope with most jobs.

Looks like they can handle any job, Brooks suspension also advertise a refurb for the 850 and 900 (Starting @ £119 ) which was'nt the case some years ago so can only assume some brave soul sent one in..

A good workshop can do anything Smile

The main problem with the 900 shock is that the piston rod seal is a unique size and not available as a spare. His suggestion was to machine the end cap to take a heavy duty standard motorcross seal. It all comes down to price ...

Well actually after having a thunk about it and considering i will need a heavier spring i doubt, plus postage costs i would fall short of the cost of a spanky new mid range shock......been spoilt having a Wilbers and remote preload an all..
