Hi all,
Is it my imagination or do some dealers think we just got of the gravy train [Image: huh.gif] I wanted to have my 900 serviced befor the spring/summer and asked my local dealer..were i purchased my machine new from for a price for a 6oooml service, I nearly felloff me chair.....£195!!!!! Yuss - it was a shock to me too, coming back to bikes after a 20-year gap. Spares and consumables are a joke(?) too. On the other hand, the government's going to claw back any ackers left over when I finally bow out, so if I can just keep spending enough on the bike. or maybe even combine the two themes......

What is included in the £195 service, I ruh roh?

These shops have large overheads, mechanics to pay year round (even though they may have very little work in the winter months). What is the average rate for a mechanic these days £40/hour?
Doin valve clearances? Use dappers valve shim exchange program and the job will be carroty - Free (other than you postin me yer shims) for sporting members.
So do you have to go to the Yammy dealer or can yer little man round the back of the charity shop do a complete major service. Are there any special skills or equipment required to service a TDM? I am not convince my 6000 mls service was done that well anyway - I had to take it back twice for things to be adjusted.

I don't commute, I just go for a ride morning and afternoon!
I haven't let anyone near any of my bikes since I suffered two near- and one <i>real </i>accident as a direct result of the spannering efforts by official dealers. It doesn't mean none of them are any good but I lost confidence and found that fixing your own bike adds a lot of fun and satisfaction.

Having said that, normal tariffs are 40 - 50 quid so if you want a proper job done to your bike then 150 - 200 quid incl parts is probably the cheapest you will get. Alternatively you can take it to a dodgy garage and have an uninterested 14 year old having a go at your bike. Since I am dodgy enough myself, I prefer doing it at home [Image: cool.gif]

Or: Try finding an enhousiast independent specialist. Some of them are just incredibly brilliant and usually charge around £25 (partly because of having less overhead than official dealers). Problem is usually to find these jewels....

Done: Sold the TDM, now have a rather large ZZR1200 filling the gap where my TDM used to live.

Got rid of that thing within 200 miles - talk about Blaaaaaaand. Got myself a rather nice KTM 660SMC in a fetching orange colour.....
I'm taking mine in for a service next week, but I made it clear to them that I would be doing the air filter, fuel filter, plugs, oil & oil filter myself before taking it to them to do the 'tricky' stuff (fork strip down and service & valve clearances). It's going to cost me about £40 for the parts to DIY, and £300 for a Yamaha dealer to do the rest (mostly labour). Yeah it does hurt, but its worth it.

I've just paid £500 that was with new chain and sproks, and the valve clearances too - but - ouch! (oh...and an MOT too)
I'm staring down the barrel of 900 quid for my '97 850. New rear shocker, new front spring kit, new chain & sprocket and an annual service - thought this biking business as mean't to be cheaper!!

lucky yer TDM prolly sips petrol at the rate of 50MPG then !!!!!!!!!!!! or then again it prolly sips as much in oil !!!!!!!! "older bikes are cheaper but require more money spending on them" !!

Hi All, I got my 900 serviced, I found a local ish one man operation, he does mot's and servicing rebuilds and spares for most machines on the road, including loads of classics, and the cost? £120 [Image: yahoo.gif] including front/ back brake fluid change he also found that the "main" dealer had left off an o-ring in the oil filter chamber [Image: ranting.gif] [Image: ranting.gif] service book all stamped etc excellent job, i'll be using him again [Image: good.gif]

TS50ER, Suzuki GT125, Cagiva 125, Suzuki GT250 20 year gap. Honda CBF600. Discovered the joy of TDM, 1974 GT250 has joined the stable

Vario touring screen, Stainless Steel Rad Guard, Fender Extender (it came off), Givi V46 Topbox (inc brake light), SW-Motech Engine Bars, Wingrack, LED Tail Light

Still in the shed:- BMW Hand Guards, Heated Grips, Aux Lamps.
im just wondering when is the next scheduled service for my bike is
it has 9000ish miles on the clock

would it be a big service costing alot [Image: blink.gif]
or just a oil,filter and plugs change which i think i could do myself(at a push [Image: rolleyes.gif] )
