location info
i see a number of people are complaining about people not including location info in their profile.
is there a way of making this compulsory on sign up or maybe a better option is a reminder on the sign up page to fill the details in?

ps. it is one of my pet hates too.....

If everyone put in their country as a minimum then wouldn't it be possible to set up the member list so you can click on the 'country' column and have it reorder the list to group people together by location??

Now you're talking, Thomas. That would be very nice indeed. There was a page on the old old old Carpe that grouped members together by country. Very handy.

Does it really matter unless you're selling something? you make something compulsory & it'll put folk off, surely the sharing of info is more important than where you are & if you don't want to put that then so what?

I agree with both camps. I like to know where people come from but we must respect peoples right to their privacy.

I also agree with the point that stuff must not be made compulsory, but it is ok to give a little reminder from time to time.

If its made compulsary then people who don't want to reveal their location will lie....
on the old forum i set up that database meself so it could sort by country...

i can make it compulsory to fill that field, but as it is currently set up you can fill it with anything...
it would mean having to manually add every country (there are hundreds) one at a time...
or hope for some handy script to do it for me... anyone?
ill have a looksee no the IPB forum. would still be just the country tho...
Hi,

I'm a newby to this forum and I didn't even have the chance to put in my location. I've only found out that it's possible by reading this topic and going in to edit my profile after my account creation.
At no point during the registration am I given the option.

being a newby I don't want to talk out of turn, but I agree with the general thread of it should be individual choice.

I prefer to give location as I don't see any reason to hide it and I'd like to ride with fellow local riders.

just my two penneth, I'll shut up now [Image: smile.gif]

I don't see that there should be arm-twisting, but at the same time
a) it's interesting to be part of a global scene, so at least to see the country would be good
b) it encourages and supports meets and rides
c) there are so many requests for info, including suppliers, that it helps to know where best to direct the advice.

Why do you need to know where peeps are from? is,nt there enough petty bureaucracy these days? If people give a location, fine, if not, fine also. Too many pen pushers in this world for my liking, needs to be a cull.

True, but there's also too much grey lethargy - I'd explain, but I can't be bothered. [Image: ambusy.gif]
I think Thomas (bless his aging wisdom) had the best idea if it comes to a compromise.
