Changing oil

[Cpeders]

It`s time for some TLC for my ride.
Today is oilchange day. Any bummers I could possibly do? Or is it straight forward, as on the old car I`m driving?

easy peasy , remember to loosen both drain plugs & don't overtighten them when replacing also with the MK2 you'll need a funnel (mind you so does the MK1 as I discovered yesterday) & it's real easy to strip the bleed bolt threads on the side of the cylinder head

I acidentaly removed this bolt....
The dark one on the upper photo. Located as seen on the lower photo.
It`s a long fellow, about 20 cm long..... Annything to worry about.

dont know what that bolt does but its not the drain plug.two drain plugs,1st lower down the engine same side as ur first foto at the bottom of the engine.second and a lot more important for keeping the garage floor clean,one next to the oil filter.the oil filter drain bolt.loads of oil will come out of this.as mentioned be carefull tightening the oil filter housing as the bolts strip the thread quite easily

sorry can't help with purpose of this bolt, but provided no engine parts moved / rotated while it was out, and it relocated smoothly, i'd say no problem. try rotating engine by hand, in gear via rear wheel before starting on the starter in case. a full rotation with no snags is a good sign. good luck and keep us posted. (don't mistake compression resistance with mechanical fouling).

Looks like the same one I accidentally removed the first time I did an oil change on my TDM.
She's travelled 30,000km since then, so relax, it isn't a problem.

Its only one of the bolts that holds the halves of the crankcase together!

Found the bolt on page 172 in the service manual.
It didn`t look very dangerous there. So I refiled the oil, put the new filter in place ad started up.
No ugly sounds, so I guess it`s allright.

Could be a bit messy if doing it in that order but it's the endresult that counts

I found changing oil rather straightfoward on the TDM, apart from having two draining points and the oil-filter sitting behind a cover (like me good ol' BMW).
The only thing I find a bit odd is when checking the oil level through the glass the level is actually <i>higher </i> before running the engine and then waiting a wee bit (as the manual says). My Buell also has a dry sump and there the tank <i>fills up </i> after having run the engine for a while. I wonder how oil can flow back into the tank (which sits above the engine and pumps) after the engine is switched off: Has Yamaha managed to crack the laws of gravity?

You see thats why I first put on the oil, and than the filter...
