900 Thermostat
I think my 9er needs a new thermostat as during normal running the temperature gauge doesn't rise very far above the cold end of the scale, only when stationary. Just enquired at the local dealer and a genuine Yamaha part is £32! As it looks just like a normal car type stat, does anyone know of a Unipart, or similar, alternative?
Now on 9er number 2 .....

Cant answer that question but are you sure the cooling system is full. If the temperature sensor is not immersed in coolant it will read low. The sensor is in the tip and not the threaded body.

Is this in the dry or just when its raining?
The reason I ask is because until I get on the motorway mine barely registers, not that its a problem that's just the way it is, huh!

The reason for suspecting a thermostat problem is, as mentioned, the bike does not reach normal running temperature when moving, ie. to the point where the two lines diverge on the gauge (it's only about half way). As Celtic alluded to, this has mainly been monitored during wet conditions (have we had any dry ones of late?) but my last 9er still got hotter in similar conditions. Also, I recently changed the coolant and the level is correct.

I asked JBX his thoughts for my high fuel consumption - as compared to other 9er riders on the recent trip to Brittany - and the low running temp is the one factor he suggested which seems most likely, as I checked all others apart from adding fuel treatment.

I may be wrong but I'm running out of ideas for a solution. I also don't believe adjusting the CO settings will make any difference as surely the ECU takes readings from various sensors and adjusts the fueling accordingly, one of which being the temperature sensor?

Will keep you all posted on progress

I suggest you to check the water temperature sensor first because the ECU monitors it to enrich the fueling at engine startup, when it is still cold.
In case this sensor is faulty the ECU keeps the fueling rich even at normal running temperature.
Normal values are :
• 20°C : 2.32 ~ 2.59 KΩ.
• 80°C : 310 ~ 330 Ω.
• 110°C : 140 ~ 150 Ω.

This may also be a faulty thermostatic valve which opens too much and therefore keeps the engine at too low temperature.

The problem I experienced was due to cataclismic rain conditions : the radiator and the engine were exposed to tons of water (me too) and the temp gauge was 1/3 its normal position.

Thanks for these resistance values JBX, I'll measure these first.
Now on 9er number 2 .....
I've notice a big change in fuel consumption up to 15mpg depending on the ambient temperature. the hotter the day the better the consumption, over winter the temp gauge hardly moves off the stop when moving and the fuel consumption is poor. I've checked plugs for colour and they are spot on. Think ECU gets confused. Suppose you I could wrap half me radiator in tin foil like we did for cars back in the day to improve winter running

Update: I found a used thermostat and housing complete with the temp sender on fleabay for a tenner. Received it today and it looks in really good condition. Will install at the weekend and let you know results ....

Just as a comparison, I did my regular 45 mile run to work today in the persisting rain and the gauge only managed to get half way to the intersection.

Took bike out for a run but as before when moving, the temp gauge only reached mid-point between cold and where the lines diverge, so all seems the same as before. Filled tank to the brim and will monitor consumption, but as nothing appears any different, not now so confident that changing the thermostat was the solution to the high fuel usage? I say this as your last niner used more fuel than us on touring.

Could it be you and not the bikes? as in a Fat Fecker?

It's time to electrically check your replacement thermo sensor.
There is a possibility this sensor is also defective - the guy on ebay changed it for a new one and sold the old one !
Or it's just because the FZ1 sensor is different.

Tis true that I ride to keep the engine revving and responsive in the corners, where as many others may stay in top all the time?

Anyhow, will see how things go and may look a playing with CO adjustments but, as I've mentioned before, I can't see how these affect the general performance whilst riding, as surely its the job of the ECU to constantly adjust the fueling after taking readings from the various input and output sensors? Anyone else got any theories on this?

Other than my bitching about fuel consumption, the bike runs really well and I don't suffer the jerkyness I had on my last bike, nor what other seem to experience ...

Checked old sensor that I removed from the bike and all resistances were within the tolerances as quoted in the workshop manual, so as replacement part is showing the same as the old, I assume it is okay too?

I think I may bite the bullet and get the local dealers to look at it, as they have the gas analysers which are needed to make accurate adjustments ...

That's very strange !
Did you change only the sensor or the whole thermo assy ?
It looks like the thermo valve stays wide open.
Best to let the mech have a look then !
