Front braking disks movement in TDM 850 '92
The front braking discs of my '92 850 tdm have a severe movement that I would like to know if is normal or not. When I pass through a bumpy road these movements and vibrations are traduced into a lot of noise and if I want to avoid it I have to use the front brake to keep straight the discs and not making noise.
Maybe the cooper (or some similar material) pieces that subject the discs are deformed, but I don't appreciate anything out of order...
Has anybody experienced something similar? Which is the solution that you have applied in order to solve this problem?
Few monts ago in Barcelona Motorcycle fair I saw a 850 tdm like mine but its discs subjection was different and not so "floating" like mine...

Can anybody help me? Thanks... [Image: unsure.gif]

The front disks on the TDM are supposed to 'float' but it sounds like yours are floating too much.
The connectors that the disks float on may be worn letting them get sloppy (may just need adjustment if they are adjustable)
Get it looked at right off, if the disks are out of order your calipers will follow rather soon.

sounds like wear in the buttons that join the discs to the centres.
Its not a problem - GSXR750WT disc were very prone to it, coz the centres were made from soft cheese like AL. TDM disc centres are made ofrm steel, so wear alot less.
Its only a problem when they are worn so much the disc rides up over the disc centre.
They won't come off the disc centres or anything like that, so don't worry about it
Best to get them fixed, as they are the brakes could 'grab' so making you slide the front end when your not expecting it. You will also start to get side play on the discs (feels like warped discs) both of these excessive movements will bugger up your braking.

Not true - brakes won't grab unless you pull on the lever

no it will not feel like warped discs I can assure you - you need run out (out of flat condition) in order to feel the symptoms of warped discs. This will DEFINATLEY not cause the sensation of warped disc.
Yes you will get side to side float, but you will only notice this if the push / pulling on the disc by hand

You might be able to hear them rattle when going over bumps at low speed, & feel the 'rock' when you got the front brake on and you push/pull on the bike when you're stationary, but thats about it
when I had my MZ MASTIFF it had a very loose floating disc, it had back and forth play of about 4mm and side play of about 2mm, it rattled like anything during normal riding but under braking it was perfectly ok, the rattle stopped and the brake was no less efficient because of it.
I put up with it for a while but the rattling got on my nerves so I ordered a replacement disc (an R1 disc fitted straight on), in the mean time I stopped the rattling with the aid of superglue, I raised the front wheel and applied a little brake pressure while turning the wheel in its normal rotation, this made the disc sit in the position it would be in under normal braking pressure, then I applied super glue to each of the buttons all the way round then left it to set, but not before giving it a few slow rotations to make sure it was centred-ish, this worked very well and did not rattle again, but I replaced the disc 2 weeks later.
it's not my time to go, it's not my time to die
the last thing I want is for my family to cry
