UK Police to fingerprint on Roadside
Police to fingerprint on roadside

Speeding motorists are to have their fingerprints checked by traffic cops at the roadside.

Trials of a hand-held electronic fingerprint reader are under way in Bedfordshire but will soon be extended over nine other areas.

The gadget allows officers to search 6.5 million fingerprints archived on the National Automated Fingerprint System, with the trial aiming to give them a result within five minutes.

The Home Office's Police Information Technology Organisation (Pito) calculates it could save more than £2.2 million a year.

Police say it will enable them to quickly check if people are on the national criminal database.

Fingerprints can only be taken from the public voluntarily using the Lantern system because the law will have to be changed before officers can force people to give prints on the street.

Police minister Tony McNulty said: "This trial represents an important step forward in our commitment to ensuring we have an effective and efficient police service fully equipped for the challenges of modern policing.

"The new technology will speed up the time it takes for police to identify individuals at the roadside, enabling them to spend more time on the frontline and reducing any inconvenience for innocent members of the public

MMhhhh could this be a way of sneakily building a national database of everyones fingerprints ?

let me put this situation to you all.

a friend and neighbour (now deceased, god rest his soul) once got falsely accused of thumping someone, got fingerprinted at the police station as you do.

now the same lad worked on farms etc as a pest control person, one day he saw a car down a lane burnt out, naturally he looked inside (to see if anyone was in it) then when next near a phone he called the police to report it.

however some while later the police turn up at his door to quiz him about the stolen burnt out car that had his fingerprints on it [Image: blink.gif] and basically accuse him of the theft and try to pin it on him. it took him somewhile to convince them otherwise.

he was totaly innocent but living alone a single fella he had a hell of a time proving an alibi even though he had rang in when he found the car. the police assumed his guilt.

moral of the tale is watch out if they ever produce a national fingerprint database [Image: unsure.gif]

Apparently, if you breach the speed-limit with more than 20 mph, a road-side DNA analysis will be assessed as well. In case you repeat the offence, you'll be replaced with a more sanitised clone of yourself. [Image: tongue.gif]

I saw a report on this on TV this morning, and the bit that tickled me was the claim that 60% of people stopped by police lied about their identity...don't know if this "statistic" was accurate, or a product of fevered journalistic imagination.

[Image: ranting.gif] SOUNDS VERY BIG BROTHER but Mr Brunstrom of North Walian Piggy Dept will no doubt love it.
Surely they need your permission to take any DNA or Fingerprints. Although I dare say 'They have ways' of obtaining these without our knowledge.
If they're doing this just for minor offenses what are they going to do for say driving with no helmet on? Take you to GESTAPO Headquarters and pull all your toe nails out!!!!!!!

Just like they are sneakily building a national database of everyones DNA.
I suppose if, when stopped, you give your name as King Leopold XIV of Bratislava you're bound to get your prints taken.

What's all this about signatures Ted?

There's an unnerving amount of obscure aristos knocking about since the demise of the eastern bloc....
You gotta admire the French in that regard [Image: wink.gif]

And cyco, I'd say in the great scheme of things that riding without a helmet IS a minor offence, just a very visible one. [Image: unsure.gif]
