Headlight question.

But there is no comparison between H.I.D. lights and extra lamps.
The original bulbs in my 850 were 35W halogens!! I've got car bulbs in there 55Wdips 60W mains. Good enough for me until they blow.

Relays mounted under the front cowl, held in place using the screws that secure the parking light.
Ok. have tested the Philip Version Plus, it does help a bit, but was expecting a bit more thot........

On my previous TDM850 MKII i also had a HID conversion kit installed (and I have one fitted on my new CBF1000), It was a great improvement to the standard filament bulb. I installed the ballast igniter and relay behind the right fairing next to the rectifier, the job was very easy and very straighforward.

If the beam isn't aiming too high and you can adjust that easily the HID system doesn't blind other drivers or at least its not worse than standard bulbs aiming too high.

The HID system offers much greater intensity of light but also because of the color of the light, white lines and reflectors are much more clearly seen in a greater distance.

I think its worth the money as its a great safety improvement.

It draws 10amps (about 120W) initially for 3-5 minutes and after that about 3amps (thats why its rated 35W).

You can find HID conversion kits starting from 100euros.

just to comment on a point brought up by LIAW. I had a micra with 130w bulbs in the spot lights + 120w from the headlights = 380w of power. When ignorant oncoming drivers didnt dip their lights they got the full force of my lights which by the way make those HiDs look like childs torches in comparison.Plus the whole lot cost £20 to fit.But it is true that you do ride/drive to what you can see cos i left behind a lot more powerful cars behind because i could see so much further.

Hi Rob do u need to mod anything or jz simply remove & install the new bulbs? will it draw too much power from the battery??? is Micra a brand name of the bulbs???

I agree with some of the statements on this thread about HID’s being more intense and possibly more blinding. However, I have HID’s on my bike and when they are actually set up correctly they don’t dazzle. The principle of HID’s is that the light is much clearer – less yellow if you will, and this translates to better definition and contrast on the road. Signs light up more clearly and road markings (if there are any left in this country) show up better. I don’t ride faster with my HID’s, I just find them safer for me. If some numpty were to come toward me and deliberately put their full beam on then I’d just slow down and sound my Stebel horn as I went by. There is no excuse for deliberately blinding oncoming traffic. The Highway Code states that if you are dazzled by oncoming traffic you should slow down – NOT BLIND THEM BACK! I’m not perfect but I do drive with my hand near the full beam switch at night to switch my mains off as soon as I see the light from another vehicle.

In all new cars that have HID’s there are laws that state that they must self adjust (as you drive along they compensate for the attitude of the car) – this sometimes means that as you go over a bump that moves the front of the car downwards the lights start to point up. When you get past the bump the lights take a moment to re-adjust. This is what may dazzle. As well as this they have to have washer jets/wipers to keep them clean. In home installations this is not law. Anyone can fit a set to any vehicle – if they are not competent they may not adjust the beam properly and this leads to dazzling. If the lens of the headlight isn’t clean enough then it can lead to dazzling. I have set mine up correctly and clean them diligently before each ride.

As for where to get them – I bought mine from HIDS4U and have no problems. Ian at HIDS4U is a good chap to do business with. My set cost £199 for both sides. You can buy one side for £100 IIRC. If any part of the system fails there is a two year guarantee in place – I have tried it and it is genuine. Try finding that with an Ebay seller (you may find it, but how much trust would you put in it?) I feel that you pay your money and you take your choice. It’s up to you where to spend your money!

yes you do have to wire them up with a suitable relay,fuses etc. Micra is a name of a car,a Nissan micra.Had that car for 8 years i got it @ 5yrs old & it NEVER failed an mot or had a welding torch on it.it was a very reliable car isnt that one of the reasons we are all riding japanese bikes.

In some circles its the same as admitting to owning a tdm,i dont have the micra anymore sold it for a clio diesel what a bag of crap.got a skoda octavia tdi now top car.
Found this thread in a search for headlight. During my maiden voyage on my "new" TDM900 I found that the previous owner had installed an HID on the low beam. Amazing light, but it made the stock high beam all the more pitiful looking. It looked like a torch shining above the sun [Image: sad.gif] Will be buying a brighter H7 bulb tomorrow. It's a shame Yamaha just didn't use H4s in the TDM like the FJR1300 has -- that bike throws a really wide, bright beam.

why not convert the Hi beam to HID also ???
