It's great pictures and knowledges. I changed plugs and coolant throught this datas. To take plugs out was so difficult without rubber inserted plug spanner. I use magnet for this job. (If had mistakes I'm sorry for my English)
Hi, Thanks for the details. I have just followed the steps on my recently acquired nine.
Two questions....
1. There was no little tube in the front of the filter housing, I was very careful, using an old towel underneath to make sure I didn't lose anything but there was no tube? I assume I am okay to run the bike without this as there was none there anyway?
2. Where do we re-fil the oil? Is there a filler cap or do I fill through the dipstick tube?

EDIT: I filled it through the Dipstick tube, stuck a short length of garden hose on the end of a funnel and filled it easy. Also checked the seep nut up inside the left hand side of frame and the oil is seeping out okay.

With the help of my mechanic brother (thanks, Bob!), I've just serviced my 900 - many thanks to CB for the write-up and photos, it made the job a breeze.
great write up just done mine today oil & filters , them screws are a bugger if you dont look where they come from . [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif[/img]
must admit i did a cock up & removed 2 other bolts further back & not on housing -- but i replaced them straight away .
all seams ok give it a test ride in the morning & a good clean for mot on monday .
just gotta sort out why the oil warning light is staying on .

Thanks for the great photos of the oil change procedure. Â I have never before (in 47 years of riding) had a bike with such a convoluted oil change routine. Â Still, I love the '92 TDM. Â What frustrates me most is the worsening oil leak I have been experiencing at the oil filter housing - even getting oil sprayed onto the right side of the rear tire - most disconcerting! Â Having bought an "experienced" TDM in 2008 I was gifted with case threads that had already been partially stripped so that even after replacing some of the bolts it is impossible to get the proper torque on them. Â Any suggestions? Â I am nearly ready to try heli-coils, but one friend suggested tapping out the case threads to the next larger size. Â Thanks!
I'd go for helicoils Jim, no more worries about stripping out threads then. Make sure you're using the correct length bolts in the filter housing as they're different lengths and it's easy to put the wrong length bolt in and strip the thread.
Thanks - I will go for the heli-coils - it doesn't look like a DIY job though. Â I think I have the bolts in correctly by length, but who knows if they were right when I bought the bike. Â I will check the manual and take the filter off again to make sure. Â After another, closer examination of the tightness of them it seems that there is only one bolt that is not cinching down properly, so I will target that for the first heli-coil. Â Your help is certainly appreciated.
