Poor old Peter managed to end up in a head on collision a couple of miles from my house. I was riding behind him and saw it all happen in slow motion. It was truly horrific to watch. The R1 didn't make the corner, went into the oncoming lane in slow-motion, then slammed into the oncoming car with a terrific noise, causing an explosion of R1 parts to shower across my path. As I rode through the debris, just missing the spinning R1 I watched in horror as Peter was thrown some 20m down the road.. I pulled up in the oncoming lane, blocking traffic to protect Peter lying in the road and ran back thinking the worst. Can't quite believe that somehow he ended up with just a cut finger and some bruising (well, pending a full check-up later today!). He's very very very lucky to have survived, I've never seen anything like it. It's not worth thinking about what would have happened if he didn't manage to ditch it and seperate from the bike just before impact

The police turned up, so did the fire brigade, they did an excellent job of cleaning up the mess and putting Peter at ease and talking us both through the shock.

Basically we were never meant to make that trackday. I am beyond caring about the trackday now, just very happy that nobody was hurt, it could have been a hell of a lot worse.

I'm sure Peter will appreciate some good wishes and comments about his misfortune to cheer him up when he comes back from the hospital if you feel like posting below!

To show that no Peters were (seriously) hurt in the making of these photographs here's a picture of the proud owner of a new 'short-wheelbase' R1..

Good to see the guy smiling though.
Bet he has second thoughtsevery time he cocks his leg over a bike from now on.

This is the reason I don't want to get a sport bike.
I like a thrash on my TDM, every now and then.... only God knows how I'd be on a R1.
I need a sig. indeed with plenty of frickin polish

" The R1 didn't make the corner "

Bollox. The rider didn't manage the corner. The R1 was more than likely perfectly capable of making the corner !

Very lucky chap.

Indicators look ok though......typical eh ?

Don't think I'd be riding behind 'Poor Peter' again if I was 'Poor Peter's' very fortunate mate.

R1 didn't make the corner ? Well, not all of it anyway

Lookin' on the bright side, it's one less R1 to use for their record attempt this Sunday

Jesus guys! Bit of judge and jury and hangman going on here

your man has just totalled his bike and has thankfully walked away unhurt - we dont know the fella, dont know his riding style, level of skill, what was going on at the time, his state of health and all the other million and one things that cause an accident.

yes its summer and, yes, bikes like R1's tend come out for the dry months. I for one am glad that they do, the summer toys make for a huge proportion of bike sales in the UK and without them, the bike market would be further on its knees than it is now - dont believe me? ask your local bike dealer - they will tell you how it is

sorry but for me this isnt what biking is about, the whole "you must be a nob if you ride an R1/Ninj(insert sports replica here to suit" My biking mates are as diverse as ever, from super motos to Harleys to Vespas and yes, I even know people who ride, dare I say it, R1's and R6's. (I once snogged a girl who had been pillion on a Gixxer too - she was lovely but thats a different story!)

If you can, hand on heart, say that you have never got the approach to a bend wrong, braked slightly awkwardly, misjudged the exit of a bend and that every moment that you ride is absolutely without error, then I take my hat of to you.

For me, that was a lucky one Peter and I am glad to hear that you are OK - hope the people in the car are ok and that you can learn something from what happened. I hope the insurance get s sorted quickly enough and everybody is back right as rain soon

Let him who is without sin................................................ ;-)
