End Of The Decade/ Start Of The New

Guy at work reckons the decade ends 31st Dec this year.
I say it's 31st Dec 2010.
The millenium atarted on 1st Jan 2001.

Any thoughts guys.
Seems the papers etc have started song of the decade
movie of the decade and they are only counting up to end of this year.
I reckon their all wrong........

Well the 2000's started on 1 jan 2000. The decade of the 1950's started on 1 jan 1950. The decade of the 20's started on 1 jan 1920. The decade of 010 will start on 1 jan 2010. The first day of ever started on 1 jan 0000. Is there something difficult about this?

the millenium changed on 31st Dec 2000/1st Jan 2001 ..... not 31st Dec 1999/1st Jan 2000

Not quite. There wasn't a year 000. It started on 0001



Strictly speaking the millenium began in 2001, but the calendar was based on an <b>estimate</b> of a bloke(who some claim to have been the son of God) from the middle east's birth. and I'm not sure why the day we now know as Jan 1st was chosen to be the first of the year.

Somebody also chose to base our number system around decimals.


-Basically, it's all arbitrary and if everybody agrees then that's fine.

I was answering the O/P.

the beginning of the first year was = 01/01/01
the end of the first year was= 31/12/01
it stands to reason that--
the begining of the 9th year was= 01/01/09
the end of the 9th year is =31/12/09
a full decade away from the start of the first year

therefore

I shall be getting very drunk this New Year's Eve

A millenium is 1000 years (1-1000)
Jan 1, 0001 to Dec 31, 0001 (1 year) repeat 999 more times to Dec 31, 1000
the second millenium begins the next day on January 1st 1001

So yes, this millenium started on <!--sizeo:5--><!--/sizeo-->Jan 1, 2001<!--sizec--><!--/sizec--> but the decade ends <!--sizeo:5--><!--/sizeo-->Dec 31, 2009<!--sizec--><!--/sizec-->

Of course that means the very first decade and the very first century both got screwed out of a year.
Isn't winter a bitch that we devote so much time to this?
