>>> INTRODUCE YOURSELF HERE <<<
Hi all just bought a late '98 850 mk2. Silver and black, black belly pan, braided front hoses, fenda extender, Hagon shock, Dynojet stage 1 kit, Predator 2-in-1 exhaust - and some apparently custom made aluminium guards rear of the peg hangers to protect boots from hot exhausts. I say plural cos they're on both sides so presumably predate the 2-in-1. Givi monorack and E45 box too. Oh and Motrax crash mushrooms. Live in Belfast, commute daily, hope to tour. Been driving a '93 K75S for the last 5 years, which I still have (bit sentimental about it - took us round Europe in 2006).

Bit of popping from the exhaust at idle, idle speed at min adjustable range makes better, going in to Yam dealer tomorrow for 2 new BT021s and fix that popping - hope it's just carb imbalance. Thinking about a Loobman for the chain, a stainless bolt kit to replace the only visible corrosion - engine bolts at the front, maybe a centre stand if it fits along with the belly pan, Stebel horn. Love the riding position (even more comfy than the Beemer), the sound, and the great torque.

Glad to find a great resource like this - the Flying Brick lads have at least three excellent resources, so it's better than a service history to me to see Carpe TDM!

Looking fwd to using the forum - and hopefully not for help on hard-to-trace problems!

Hi all
I'm new too. Barry, You did'nt buy the bike off a little geordie bloke did you? Sounds just like mine, same pipe, tyres etc. Even the lumpy idle....
I live in NZ but have spent the last two summers in the uk on a 96 tdm which came in to my possesion by a pure fluke. Lucky me, I love it. It had 8000 mls on it in 2006 & when i left the uk 2 weeks ago it was sitting with 18'700 on it. Went over to France this year & have spent a lot of time in the borders & riding in Scotland. Woo Hoo! Hopefully in a few days I will be the proud owner of a 98 mk2 here in NZ. Great site, it's easy to see why the TDM's create so much enthusiasm when you own one.
If I can find a helpful child I may be able to post some photos in the future, bit worried about hanging around school gates soliciting pupils for computer advice though.

LOL no some lad just south of Belfast who seems to have had it a few months, bought it in England from Lockyers garages in Essex (Dagenham? not familiar with the area) and brought it over but not taxed it or owt. Just had to register it for tax here (little extra bother but no expense) and she's all legal. Just heard from the Yam dealer who reckoned there was a pinhole in the exhaust contributing to the pop but think the main fault lies with plugs - hope thats all it is. They're balancing the carbs too. Will post pix this weekend, after I give 'er a good polish

A pin hole in the exhaust? The idle on mine did'nt change when I put the predator pipe on even though I had to tighten it a few times after the initial few runs. Initially it blued where the various pipes join but that seemed to have stopped. I had put my money on the carbs needing balanced, it sounded like a slight mis-fire on one cyclinder at idle. I'm back in nz so it will be a while before this gets checked. Hopefully the top end will be getting a bit of work done over the winter to smooth flow & breathing when the carbs get balanced. welcome new TDM peoples. those predator zorsts are quite difficult to 'seal' properly and do stain up badly at times so keep an eye on em and give them a clean when ya can as the stainless steel doesn't !!! watch yer OIL level religiously or it may run dry. the carbs on a TDM 850 rarely go out of balance and if so only by a very small amount. WiCkY
spyball alarm/immob,
bluespot brake calipers and Stainless hoses, Fournales air adjustable shock with Remote Resevoir,
forks raised 10mm thru yokes, racetech linear fork springs in 15 wt oil, Kappa wingrack/luggage, heated grips, Kedo handguards, dual heat controller to power heated jacket liner and or pants!!, Stebel 136DB horn, K&N air filter, colour matched Baglux tank cover (magnetic tank bag modified to fit cover), osram +50% headloight bulbs, headlight protector,"

it doesn't, i was clearly pointing out how the Predator exhausts look (when they are not stained up and crap looking) and sound good. the oil consumption is really a trait of the TDM 850's, new rings and possibly pistons would help to reduce it.

Glad to hear that. The oil use was a big puzzle, the engine is mint & well maintained & shows no smoke or other nasty oil burning hints. On the site I mentioned they claim the cause is an incorrectly fitted oilseal on the gearbox shaft. I think I will start their. A tad cheaper.

i am 99% sure that you will be wasting your time changing that seal, i changed it and the new replacement one had slightly longer tangs and i made sure it was fitted correctly, it made no difference to me oil consumption at all. what miles has your bike done as both of mine don't smoke or leak oil either but they use it on the motorway. i think you will just get used to it like i haven't !!

i am 99% sure that you will be wasting your time changing that seal, i changed it and the new replacement one had slightly longer tangs and i made sure it was fitted correctly, it made no difference to me oil consumption at all. what miles has your bike done as both of mine don't smoke or leak oil either but they use it on the motorway. i think you will just get used to it like i haven't !!<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Fair call. Mine had 19'000 almost, on the clock, used about 800ml/1000mls on my normal border roads but was closer to 2000ml/1000mls on french motorways at silly mph. Quite startling. Thicker oil was a slight improvement day to day in our soggy summer but it was red hot in France which would'nt have helped for comparisons sake. A work in progress..

Just a very light wipe occasionally - we use the same technology as the George Foreman grill.
