Fork Oil Seal (mkI)
Yeah, well, went to the dealer yesterday. Of course they had no idea what is going on, but they are engaging the technical department of yam Norway to find a solution. Meanwhile I get some poor unoriginal seal and put it all together. T's been 23 deg C for a week now, and my bike still lacks 1 wheel.
Thanks so far, I'll get back if I get an "official" solution.

<!--/colorc-->."

Well, I had<!--coloro:#FF0000--><!--/coloro--> the right seal<!--colorc-->
<!--/colorc-->. Yammie parts often interchange. It measured approximately 10.75 to 10.80 mm thick. Did you measure your seal?<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Well, did you measure your seal?
Well, I finally got to change it - with original seals. Don't know what it has been all about, but there it was.
(see also this thread: http://www.carpe-tdm.net/ipb/index.php?sho...=12781&st=0)
Now - the important part is the method:

1. Remove spring
2. Extend the tube fully
3. Fill it all up with oil (you need to add few decilitres, less than half a litre, though)
4. Reenter fork cap and tighten by hand
...you do now have a quite rigid suspension....
5. Tie a load strap around the fork (lengthways, dummie !) and inser a car jack under the strap at the bottom of fork
6. Tighten strap
7, Extend jack until seal pops out
8. Clean up mess (it won't be very much oil around, but it's hard to avoid 100%)

No big pooooppp!, just a little "blip" just as pressure is relieved (remember, oil isn't compressed, so very little oil has to expand out of opening). That's the idea about not trapping any air inside it - would cause a ssssplash of oil....

Good luck !

I really should have read this before I went at the forks, but I used the haynes method of pulling the forks apart 4 or 5 times to get the oil seal out. From the photos, I can see both bush now have the teflon damages. Question 1: Anyone know where I can order the bushes, dont seem to be on wemoto for the Mk1 Question2 : Do i need to replace them? Are they a cause of leaking oil?

Cheers
Fint
The bushes won't cause oil leaks, but I'd replace them if slide hammering the forks apart via the Haynes method (in fact I did yesterday). I got mine from www.fowlers.co.uk/parts. Think they work out about £50 or so which seems an extortionate price such small bits of metal. While you've got them apart give them a good clean out, I found a suprising amount of crud inside both the tube and the outer bit.

You didnt fancy giving the Torture device method a go Chris?

I actually wanted to change the bushes rather than seals. They're the forks I got off Tylers bike, so I don't know the history, and there was a little bit of movement on one leg.

Finto, just checked and it was £68.70 delivered for bushes, oil seals and a pair of exhaust gaskets for Fowlers. Took me by suprise too.

FWIW I re-used the seals on my old Mk2 with no issue. There was only a couple of mm of damage which I cleaned off.

Saved loads of wonga. Bob's your transvestite auntie.

Haha, just got in from the garage, in there since 5 today. Getting the new oil seals to sit in properly is some pain in the arse. I had a bit of pipe but getting it struck dead on to fit the seal in is deadly hard.

Anyway, got 1 fork sorted, seems perfect. As for the other, i RUINED the seal in frustration, trying to hit it in with a flat head screwdrivr and hammer, lol. Time to get onto wemoto again
<!--quoteo(post=0:date=:name=finto)-->QUOTE(finto)<!--quotec-->... i RUINED the seal<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Use an old seal between the pipe & the new seal to drive in the new one. Just grind or sand off some of the rubber on outside of the old one. [Image: THUMB.gif]
As I've got the remains of a knackered set of forks lying around, I used a spare of the thick washer that sits under the seal. Sat that on top of the seal and whacked it in with a screwdriver and hammer.

Just doing some 3VD seals before see this. Also been supplied 43/55/10.5 seals not 41/53/11 which came out.
The Dapleb patented fork torture system failed us yesterday. With a simple mod to the method to avoid copyright issues we used a 10 tonne hydraulic press, but the seal blew rather than poping out.

Seems it has only ever worked for me (recovering newish bushes from newish seals). (screws up expensive patent application and lobs in bin).

What happened when you tried the fork torture, narled the teflon?

Hang on, I was forgetting you had 2 patent applications. This was the fill with oil and compress to pop the seal out method, which I believe has worked for a few others. Had to slide hammer them apart and he's now waiting for new bushes.
