It would seem like if there's so many people who are so discontent with the way their country is running things, why not stay there and fix it? The thing with the Mexican immigrants, you talk to them and most of them are proud of their heritage and proud of being Mexican. Alas, poverty and the resulting and/or contributing lack of education is like a black hole of infinitely limited possibilities. Years of political corruption hasn't helped either. There are places in TJ, you'd think, "how could people live like this in the 20th century?" Literally making a living scraping through garbage for food or something salvagable, living on top of a garbage heap in a home made of cardboard and plastic pipe -- within sight of riches beyond their imagining. Tragic.

It doesn't "suck" to be tollerant of other people and their cultures, I agree that a minority of immigrants make no effort to integrate into local societies and it is a problem, however we have to make an effort to make people feel welcome and make allowances for their religious beliefs, alot of these people have nowhere else to go.

Again, sorry for the glib reply, not exactly what I meant. I believe we should all be tolerant (no matter where we're from), and we should all be a little more thick skinned when it comes to things that are clearly jokes, parody, or opinion. We can be offended, if the cartoon depiction of Mohammed offends us, then voice "your opinion" and write to the editor or cancel your newspaper subscription, or whatever. Free society, free speech ... doesn't mean that we all agree. Doesn't also give you the right to march in the streets and preach violence or demand that the offender be beheaded! Maybe that's what you do in your country under your religion, but it's not going to happen here (nor in western Europe, AFAIK).

What sucks is that there is a kind of reverse discrimination, where if you're a white, Anglo-Saxon middle-aged heterosexual christian male in the US today -- or what one might call the majority -- that you have to tip-toe around every opinion you might have lest it offend someone in the minority. It's not necessarly wrong, it's just been taken to such an extreme that it feels like the whole world is going to turn white bread bland. Or, worse, the majority is going to explode from all of the repression until the pendulum swings the other way and we end up with another Hitler or Jonestown or ... who knows? Look, I'm a woman working in a very male-dominated field. I deal with a certain amount of prejudice and sexism every day. By that I mean I deal with it. If it becomes offensive I'll call them on it, but I'm not going to be intimidated and it's not going to interfere with my doing what I have to do. I guess what I'd like to see is a common middle ... let the pendulum stop there with a little wiggle room on either side -- a little tolerance and a willingless to compromise.
