Mine jumped all the way to the stop, eventually broke off half of the needle. Twice.

My hub speedo drive was cracked. 

Over-torqued in its past?

Replaced with new part.

Speedo is normal now.

If I recall, Yamaha supplied the new drive.

I have two busted speedos now, too. 

The bulbs are good.
