One of my longest duration hobbies is photography. In recent years a similar mindset has come about, which says why should you buy the latest and greatest camera, when the one which is a few years old is probably still good, so use your money instead to go to locations which you haven't photographed before instead of emptying the bank and taking pictures in your same local area.(with a newer camera).

 

In a similar vein, they also say the best camera is the one you happen to have in your hand at the time, and to me that's the same with bikes too, once you're out and riding around having fun then a brand new bike might not add a huge amount, and the money saved can go towards ferry costs and hotel stays.
