Finance is what they want you on (for their kickback) in order to soften the blow of a none negotiable price. On two occasions I offered a cash payment and it was refused (for a TDM and an AUDI); also, personal details that have to be given for the all important credit worthiness checks somehow resurface for after-sale promotions and servicing, followed by targeted marketing online (somehow?), often by sister organisations.

Old fashioned customer service and product knowledge is the last thing in the minds of most retailers these days. If you know your stuff (law) most will listen, with distain, but most just want to see the back of you, so if you are planning a major purchase (eg bike) ask your mates for unbiased recommendations as most media outlets merely spout the contents of a press pack in order to remain on preferred reviewer lists.
