Used to walk/run/walk a mile to a mates' house to see if he was coming out to play, sometimes at exactly the same time as he had walked/ran/walked off to my house.
 Walked to school and back EVERY day, a mile each way.
We climbed everything climbable.
 Swam in the local quarry pond/canal/river/woteva. Camped up near the local woods at weekends. Used to lend my pushbike to others who couldn't afford one, and borrowed others' when mine was broken.

Parents used to shout you in if you were late, no-one owned watch but ya still got a clip round the ear !
