I have owned 8 BMWs in 19 years (including a R1150GS) and I can assure you a TDM isn't such a bad bike at all. I still like the original and useful concepts BMW comes up with from time to time, but I kept having problems with the fragile transmission on the 4 valve boxers(gearbox/clutch/shaftdrive and the oil-seals between these components), and finish / winter-resistance is no longer a BMW stronghold either so that was the reason to go look somewhere else. I quite like the F800 range (I suspect the engine might be less prone to transmission problems), see if BMW brings out a GS version. But there's a good chance I hang on to the TDM a bit longer, and try finding an old R80GS to work on

The R1200GS has alloy wheels as standard as well these days
