4Tx Silver Project
I thought I'd better post a bit about the Mk2a I bought off Heywood a couple of weeks ago so here goes.

So picked up a Mk2a in silver that has sat around a lot, about 6 years to be more precise, it was advertised with pinholes in the tank so assumed carbs would be in need of a good clean and battery would be well and truly dead at the very least, the day I picked it up I took the van back to work thinking of unloading on the following monday when I had more help, got there to find the manager in doing some homework so blagged him into helping unload, next day I took the van back after offloading my makeshift ramp and decided to hook up a battery booster charger as I hadn't even heard it turn over, done the deed and hit the starter button to check it wasn't siezed and within a fraction of a second found myself in a very small room with a running engine getting gently gassed, switched it off and walked home with a big grin.

Fitted a new battery last friday (same to my other one today) and hooked up a test tank that holds about half a litre filled with avgas (we have that at work) and wheeled it outside to try it, fired up lovely and soon idled nice with no choke, gave it a run up and down the industrial estate and it rides nice and pulls well.

Looked inside the tank with a boroscope and found lots of corrosion in the lower corner where it sits on the stand, chuck a load of triangular stone shot in and gave a right good shake around to shift any loose stuff, this made the holes bigger so hatched a plan, tapped in the bad spots with a ball pein hammer and filled over with isopon leak stop (fuel and ethanol proof), and ordered a 2 part epoxy fuel tank liner stuff to go belt and braces, it could do with another tank but that will do in the mean time.

Looking over it I recon it should breeze through an MOT, once tank is fuel proof I'll give it a proper run and maybe take it for a test.

sounds like you have a good project, if you can't find a replacement tank is the existing one weldable (as in if the over all metal is not too thin), either by spot welding the holes or cutting in new metal

Brilliant SB. Glad it worked out well.
Doin valve clearances? Use dappers valve shim exchange program and the job will be carroty - Free (other than you postin me yer shims) for sporting members.
I'm not yet sure what I'm going to do with it, it's a heck of a pile of spares for the red peril but way too good to use it for parts, may just hang on to it or may stick a full mot on it and sell it.

One bit I didn't expect was both side fillets have intact mounting lugs.

I don't think you'll be losing any money if ewe decide to sell.

Tank appears to be leak free, gave it a run yesterday and once opened up it was crap but fine at lower throttle setting so carbs had to come off after all, what a fiddly sodding job that is getting the cables sorted.

Gave the jets a blow out with the airline and cleaned the float bowls and gave it another run today, huge difference indeed, runs the same as the red peril and nice and smooth.

I am officially a happy bunny.

Now just got to decide what to do with it.

What a great dilemma (‿)

Add a full mot with no advisories to the project list, took the red peril this afternoon and decided to pop back with the silver machine.

Ran nice, gave it a good hard blast to make sure all is good, managed just over 60mph officer... although the speedo must be wrong as it read just shy of 120mph...  :unsure2:  Lol (allegedly)

😁
Still not sure what to do with it but it's on marketplace at a good markup just to chance my arm, if anyone on here wants it let me know as it'll knock off £150 straight away from starting price.

Sorry Andy there's not enough room on the fairing for that many stamps.
