Manhattan Motorcycles
Hi all,

Just been down to Manhattan Motorcycles in Sheffield to have a rivet link fitted instead of the split link. Not really very impressed by the mechanic at all. First thing he said after inspecting the link through the dirty polythene bag for about 1 second was "oh that's a rubbish link" (neither of the other two people who looked at it said that, and to me it looks very much like the other rivet links I've seen on google images). Then I watched him fit it, and he didn't bother to use any grease on it - not sure if that's a crime or not. Finally, he decided to tell me that, as the chain was not a DID chain (which coincidentally are the ones they stock), it "probably wouldn't last the year" because it "looked good but was made of crap steel". His rationale was that it came with a split link (as well said "rubbish" rivet link). The chain, by the way, is a triple SSS gold X-ring variety, which sells for pretty much the same amount as DID X ring chains (about 120-130 quid with decent sprockets on the internet), and, according to their marketing bumf, their chains are used by Yamaha racing teams blah blah blah. The point is I don't think it's a crap chain. Maybe I'm wrong, but I just think the mechanic was just trying to take me for a ride, so to speak. So on that basis, and the lack of grease on the link, my advice would be to avoid Manhattan Motorcycles for mechanical work. I don't think I'll be going back there.

Anybody have a different experience with them?

DD
never heard or dealt with them, i'd ignore his comments if your convinced you have bought a decent chain. I tend to fit DID, Tsubaki or Iris chains as they are well known brands.........but that doesn't mean they are the best ! Tell the mechanic to log on here and oil tell him he's full of shit

Any actual advice in the thread about chain link woes (note: that's not this one and not even really the last one either) was gratefully received. I don't know quite what you want from me. A heart of gold perhaps? This thread, on the other hand, like this whole section of the forum, is about telling people about seeming negative experiences so that we all know what places/products to avoid. So I don't know quite why you're still banging on about people taking your advice, such as the incredibly useful "yer full of shit", which incidentally I think should be added to a revised version of the TDM 900 manual, in a special section dedicated to you.

I think your mucanic may have been talking kack. Surely its the pins in the link that take the pressure & the only way I can tell brands apart is by the stamp on the side. I recently fitted a new chain which came with a link & a little splot of grease to put on the pins prior to fitting as recommended in the instructions . I had to use a ball peen hammer (carefully) to secure the link. 5k on & it has not moved at all.

The spanner monkey prob said that cos he's a twat!!(sorry wicky syndrome) he said that cos you didn't buy it from them. If you fitted the sprockets yourself youed be able to do the old 2 hammer shuffle to fit it your self!! I only bother with these places for mots.
My Super Modded TDM has gone to a new home Sad

I'm now a carbon whore!

no experience of them meself, but any mechanic who fits a part he believes to be crap has gotta be of dodgy character/skills
if i thought a product was shite i would refuse to fit/install/use it

ditto - even tho there are a couple of trustworthy mechanics locally
a decent chain riveter tool can be had for under £50, why not do it yourself?
if anyone local to Reading needs one done i'm happy to show you how

Thanks for the info D Dave, I'm in Worksop and it's handy knowing about local dealers etc.

That mechanic spluttering nothing but negatives makes me wonder if he applies the same mindset to his work. A negative attitude at work usually results in sloppy standards. At the end of the day, he's doing neither himself, or his boss, any favours.

Have you tried The Bike Depot in Worksop ? Probably not the cheapest but they are a small local business and both mechanics are happy, smiley peeps and would probably talk a glass eye to sleep given half a chance !

Cheers for responses. Not tried anywhere but MM's Studley except to go into the Sheffield dealer to be quoted a service price that scared me so much I never went back. I heard about the hammer option for rivet links (well actually I saw it when I was trawling youtube videos on how to fit chains and sprockets), but £5 to have a 'professional' do it with a riveter seemed too good to refuse at the time. Should I be worried about the lack of grease on the link? The mechanic's rationale when I mentioned it was that "the rest of the chain is very greasy" (so it will work its way around??). But I have a strange notion that grease gets locked into the o/x rings when the chain is put together and doesn't really work it's way into those places after that. Is that right? Should I try to cram some grease into the link somehow?
he should have put the supplied grease on the links and between the little rubber rings when fitting
what did the instructions on the box the chain came in say?

Dont fret re the grease, just apply a liberal spray of lube and it will work its way in to the link ,lube best applied to a Warm ie: ridden chain but it will get in regardless.
