Sounds to me that you have just given him the lift up the ladder that he needed to get rid of the SO bit and become a fully fledged PC.

Officers of his calibre seem to always get recognised, might even make it to Chief Superintendant in North Wales with his skills.
If only everthing were as simple and reliable as the pitch fork!
