Atom Batteries - Any Thoughts? For A Mkii 850

battery didn't make it through winter. So....

 

Yuasa claim 210 CCA

 

and 

 

Atom claim 240 CCA

 

Any body got any real world experience of Atom?

 

I know that Yuasa have got a good reputation but I'm open to new things if they are good.

 

 

 

 

Never heard of Atom ! take a look at Motobatt, has more cca if i remember right, but Yuasa normally has long longevity.

Not Sure why but the last 2 Motobatt "s that I've had only Lasted 1 year on the TDM 900  ( replaced under warranty very easily )

Yussa lasted 13 months ! 

Currently using a Kyoto  purchased in June 25 - cheap from Wemoto 

Cant understand why I'm killing so many Batteries - Bike used Daily 40 mile to and from work  so not left sitting for weeks etc 

No big Drain on Electrics etc  

On the plus side its a lot easier to replace the Battery  on the 900  than the 850  

 Guess it come down to How long it takes for your knuckles to Heal after replacing the Battery on the 850  Smile
Maybe incorrect/missing maintenance during shelf life. AGM batteries degrade during storage without refreshing charges before they rrach a too low voltage.

i was dubious of this brand but very big company.

i got one for my xjr1300 and it is very powerful and going well over the winter

I've had failures of all top brands over the years.

I kept promising to give them a top-up charge periodically, and those which I did that with survived, so I started to charge them for an hour once a week during winter. Then I  went high tech and used the Fav's charger technology, consisting of a 7-day plug in time switch in front of the charger.

As long as your charger doesn't leak when the power is off then the battery is safe to leave connected to it.

Lead acid batteries need a periodic charge to re-dissolve the crystals which build up in the electrolyte which eventually short the plates and cause dead cells

Well that's the Kyoto Battery Dead now ! 

I must be doing something to them ? but for the life of Me I cant think what 

no obvious Faults etc  Bike ran fine on Friday -  around 90 miles  couple of quick stops 

Sunday - Dead  battery 3.2v not going to even bother trying to recover it 

 So waiting on  a  replacement  - Fulbat FTRB 

I probably should see if I can get a replacement under warranty ( a spare would be handy ! )

Could be worth checking the voltage while running, possibly cooking batteries?

+1, with the engine running the voltage should be at least 13.8, and upto 14.6 volts

 

If it's higher then the reg/rec is faulty

If it's lower then the alternator or reg/rec could be faulty

 

EDIT, another possible cause might be a parasitic draw while the bike is off, from an alarm, an immobiliser, or some other 3rd party device connected directly to the battery, such as automatic hand grip heaters

Nothing has showed up in the past - ( of course I'm only checking once I've replaced the Battery then ignore till next Time )

I used to think it was because of the Cold temps I start the bike in ? the 900 only good to around  -2c  the 850 would start down to -5c 

Might  just need to get another 850  Smile

I did use the Heated grips on Friday    I'm sure I flicked the switch off
