Powder Coating Colour Advice
At the moment I`m restoring a Yam XJ900 Diversion, and as I`m sure some of you will know, the frame is colour matched with the body panels. I`m now down to the bare frame and ready to have it powder coated. Rather than wet paint I want to powder coat for durability. Trouble is, I`m struggling to find a colour match in powder coat.

I know the colour is Dark Cyan Metallic #2 and the Yamaha paint code is no. 0337. I know that you can get metallic powder but I keep getting asked for the RAL no. which I can`t guess at as I can`t find anyone to send me any swatches without paying what seems pretty dear to chuck away afterwards, so that I can try to match the colour.

Are there any powder coaters on here that could help, or point me in the right direction? Has anybody done it with any other bike and could tell me how to go about matching the colour? As all of the body work is in good condition I`d like to keep it standard and I think if the frame was black it would look odd. I`ve tried taking a body panel with me to a couple of firms but it seems that most only have a certain range of stock colours and I kinda got the feeling of `can`t be arsed` when I asked about colour matching. Maybe it`s just a surly brummy sod thing as I also rang a couple out of range of me popping in and they couldn`t have tried harder to help even though they couldn`t. :help:

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Can't help directly, but found this...

Problem is that colour on screen may differ to reality (and also per screen...)

......may not resolve your difficulty, but I found the following companies v.helpful:

rsbikepaint.com

&

bikecolours.co.uk

Seem to recall that there’s a paper label on the left-hand frame rail under the seat (at least there is on my/ other TDMs)

which gives the ‘officials name for your paint colours......and the above guys will supply with / maybe without that.

....Jiff
can you get a pantone swatch ?. There are equivalents between both systems .... https://www.easycalculation.com/colorcon...-table.php
<p style="text-align:center;">Ohlins, PC3, fuel cut defeat, +4deg timing, 17" front wheel.

....just amplify my previous post ( having not absorbed the full content of your posting)

I’d be very surprised if the above recommended paint suppliers wouldn’t be able to supply the correct paint,

given that you have the ‘official’ name(s)

`tis what I gave them for my TDM, & without further ado they supplied a perfect match

Not sure if ya can get a perfect match with powder coating Jiff.
There are colour issues when going the powdercoating way. When I rebuilt my 600 Ten I was searching for Faraway Blue. Found spray paint easily enough (although there were three different shades!) finding a powdercoat for the frame was impossible. Some blues were close but not enough not to be noticed. There is just no mixing! In the end decided to go silver as the different blues looked c..p.

On that note, the silver, being metallic, needed a clear coat on top of the colour coat. Not only more expensive but also double the thickness. Caused some issues later with assembling. Washers needed to be replaced with thinner ones for example. Also put bolts into all threads. Pain in the butt to recut the threads later. Easier to grind down the coating with a dremel.

The other issue is a spot underneath the tank where the sand blasting was not thorough enough. Rust had returned and spread underneath the coating causing it to blister and come off in largish flakes. Fixed it by painting it. Luckily not visible.

Would I powdercoat again? Probably not.

....I’m learning something every day

which is hardly surprising when starting out from minimal understanding

I managed to get hold of some swatches for the RAL colours in the end, but no luck. As Muppdog said, you can find something close , but not close enough. The nearest I could get was RAL 6036, pearl opal green, which was just a gnats knacker lighter in shade. Trouble is I think it would be too noticeable on the frame against the colour of the body panels. Looks like I`m going to have to go down the wet paint route, but at least I can get the correct colour easily from a few suppliers.

Thanks for the replies chaps :good:
