California To Alaska 2010
Hi All,

Just starting this thread as a placeholder - pics/report to follow as trip begins.

Planned departure date is Thursday July 22 from Tracy, CA to arrive Vancouver, BC sometime Friday (collect GF in Vancouver). From there, Saturday AM, ferry over to Vancouver Island (Nanaimo) then up to Port Hardy (northern tip). Sunday AM, ferry (15hrs) to Prince Rupert, BC via inland passage (supposed to be gorgeous). Monday AM, east on 16, then north on 37 to Stewart, BC. Might fish a day in Stewart - we'll see. Next week or so, make way up 37 into Yukon then across to Anchorage, AK where we park it for 4-5 days in comfy hotel. GF wants to take day trips via plane to Arctic Ocean and remote islands that are supposedly like Galapagos. I don't even want to think about landing in a small sea plane in 40 knot winds and seas.

As for which bike? Dunno yet. TDM is fully prepped except I still have this f*&^ing cross-wind cut out issue. Have new coils/leads/plug caps/air filter/airbox rubbers on order but parts may not make it in time. Very unsure if bike is sorted for that kind of ride (all elevations; some serious weather/winds). New GSA arrives day I leave, and concerned about 'infant mortality' problem on that sucker. Kind of down to the wire on the whole deal, but hey, it's supposed to be an adventure. I just didn't figure it would start before I left my driveway.

More to come... will try to send pics from the road.

Robert
If you ask me Rob there is no question of which bike to take.

If I had a new toy to play with, I'd want to use it.

The whole GS wire problem is going to bite you sometime , may aswell be on a big adventure.

Plus the GS is designed for that kind of journey, breaking down is just part of the experience.

Take the GS, leave the TDM at home safe dry and warm,

waiting for its Pa to come home, Open the garage door, shout "Fecking BMW's", throw the GS key in the bin and pick up the TDM key and take it out for some real Motorbiking.

As always totaly un-biased advice from your Uncle Ivan

Have a safe journey.

Cheers, Ivan

Thanks Ivan. Good advice as always.

I caught a break on delivery - new bike arrive Weds so I have Weds night and Thurs morning to sort things. I just ordered an XM radio antenna attachment dohicky for my Zumo 550, and will install autocomm system prior to the trip. Let's see if the GF and I can agree on a channel. Should be fun having tunes on a big ride - never even bothered w/ my ipod before.

That's a frickin beast of a bike - was doing long walk around on showroom model yesterday. Holy crap makes the TDM look small.
