Washing A Helmet? - Muppdog - 26-08-2017

Hi Guys

Before you start I know what i am asking about is not recommended. Here I go anyway!

I went on a lovely 2 week trip to Wales, the Lakes, Skye (lie, never got there because they refused me on the ferry!) Highlands, Northumberland etc. You get it. I got wet at least twice a day, then sweated my backside off in the following heat, never really got dry in all the places. It started to pong a bit after a week. Linings were washed and dried overnight. Still. Especially the helmet. A couple of sneezes inside did not help. Towards the end it smelled like a cat had pished in it when putting it on in the morning. I now have removed the cheek pads and washed them. But the rest of the lining is non removeable. Tried upholstery cleaner. Not really doing the job. Needs soaking rinsing soaking rinsing and so on. Then I discovered a 20@20 program on our washing machine. My thinking is what happens if I stick the helmet inside its helmet bag, stick the lot in the mashine with soap flakes, turn the spin off. Surely it got hotter than 20 degrees on my head, and you could eat soap flakes if you had to. And water (and manly man sweat) had only a ponging effect so far.

What do you think?

By the way, she got no idea of my plans. She is at a competition tomorrow. Ideal timing. That said, if she wins I might just mention the need for a new helmet. On health grounds.

I'd try soaking in a sink full of soap flakes or baby shampoo and water rather than in in a machine. Any rotation of the drum would bash the hell out of a helmet.

Thanks,

did not think about the plastic vanes inside the drum, Only wanted to protect the drum and the helmet with the cloth bag it came in.

Sorry, Febreze is nasty stuff. Rather start smoking than filling my lungs with that. Wasn't sure about Bicarb. It is a chemical that reacts with water and not sure what effect it will have on the foam.

Looks like a shower with Shoe is on the cards tonight. Can't wait.

And anyhow, apparently she does not mind me buying a new helmet. If I need it I need it. Nice. Not sure what the real cost of it will be once I paid her compensation for missing out.
