more then one "period" in a filename is a possibly a dodgy file (virus/trojan/...)

One reason that may not fly is that since many people have thir pc's set to NOT show file format endings
ie: bikepicture.jpg would show up as bikepicture
Some nasty people put up files that look like bikepicture.jpg to them but it is really bikepicture.jpg.exe and is a nasty executable file.

Its a very good safety feature and I, for one, am glad it's set up that way.

Having to rename a file is a small price to pay for safety.

some operating systems like Windows XP allow you to turn off file extension (from showing) like .jpg or .gif

If you have them off and see wicky.jpg you may click it out of habit. But since the file extension is turned off you actually clicked on wicky.jpg<b>.EXE</b> .EXE means an 'executable file' ie: a program. That click just said it was ok for your computer to run wicky.jpg.exe and that is probably a virus or like that.

Any clearer?
