The death knell for nasty cameras? - Difflock - 31-07-2006

In the same issue of MCN as the pics of that new Kwak Versys, the re was an article going on about the plate recognition cameras could well be outlawed due to invasion of privacy or some such reason. I didn't have time to read the full article as I was only picking my bike up from the garage (mysterious slow puncture - checked out fine... [Image: huh.gif] ) and in a rush.

This can only be a good thing, or then again aren't those cameras forward facing only and thus no consequence if you're on a bike?

The Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) Cameras are NOTHING to do with speed detection. They are linked to various databases and tell the operators if the vehicle being read is stolen, insured, MOT'd, taxed etc.

I work a lot with this system and it is a brilliant tool for taking these people and vehicles off the roads.

We recover many stolen vehicles, make many arrests for crimes and disqualified driving, and now have the powers to seize uninsured vehicles or vehicles being used by unlicensed drivers.

Personally I feel much safer riding my motorbike knowing that something positive is being done to get these people off the roads.

As for 'An invasion of privacy' it is fully covered by the permissions we use (I'm not going to get all legal here by quoting act and section).

The ANPR system is one we law abiding citizens need to keep, it detects stolen vehicles and vehicles known to be used by villains. The cameras can read back or front plates. They are absolutely nothing to do with speed and are not to be feared. I for one certainly hope they are not found to be unlawful, they assist in catching a lot of travelling criminals. (Who may be trying to nick my bike)

i agree, i think they are a good thing [Image: good.gif]
but cash-cow speed cameras are a different matter entirely, bring back proper coppers to police the roads properly.

lol !! folks i gorra agree too that they are a good ting, wifey saw a load of untaxed/illegal vehicles clamped in Exeter t'other day and we were assuming that anpr was probably used to immobilise them.

Couldn't agree more... Coppers catch the prats who drive while pouring tea from a flask, shave, swerve whilst getting their sandwiches from the back seat, sit in the middle lane when nobody is in the nearside etc etc etc... Speed cameras are such a clumsy device and can only ever catch people if they exceed a pre-set speed limit. [Image: mad.gif]

I hate speed cameras, and hate the people who say that they are for our own safety... If they are concerned about our safety then get more coppers back on the road, and dont fob us off with the wombles that drive up and down the motorway in a pretend police 4x4 picking up litter after an accident! i'm sure there was something on the BBC site about them being illegal.

Andy R-

Thanks for clearing that up.
OK then - yep we need to keep ANPR cameras!

Naughty MCN! [Image: smile.gif]

Alunl - by those wombles would you be referring to the flashy new VOSA vehicles and their occupants? [Image: biggrin.gif]
Don't worry - apparently (according to a source on Rebel V8 - a Yank car forum I frequent), they're not allowed to exceed the speed limit or chase you. You still need to get your collar felt by a proper copper what can pull you over (and the the VOSAstapo can hit you with another offence afterwards).
I do think that the money should have been spent on more officers of the law, preferably beat bobbies etc.

aye but by using these Traffic Officers (me neighbour is one of em) it means real coppers can concentrate on "real crime".

"Highways Agency Traffic Officers are not there to enforce the law. it is, however, an offence not to comply with their directions or to ignore their instructions."
