Addition To The Fleet - AL-58 - 12-12-2009

We now have an F65GS in the garage too (the one thats not a 650 but really 800cc just to confuse everybody).

With a big ride with lots of dirt coming next year, Marie wanted to get something a bit more useful that her R1150R.

I've ridden it a bit now, very nice in its own way, lighter that the TDM, very responsive throttle. But I get back on the TDM and still think "Jeez I love this bike". Next year I'll be getting a more dirtworthy addition too, not sure what yet, could be an F65GS Dakar or a DR650. TIme to think about it anyway.

I've now been riding the F650GS and enjoying it way too much, so tomorrow I'm looking at an F800GS for myself. The minister for war and finance has given her blessing(to get me back into the BMW fold I think). Now the problem is going to be how to keep the TDM when they are fairly similar packages. As much as I love the TDM, she's in danger at the moment.

A few reviewers have reckoned the 650 is a better ride than the 800 as they claim the lower state of tune makes for a for flexible engine.

Addition To The Fleet - duibhceK - 20-12-2009

the only downside of the 650 is that it doesn't have spoked wheels. Otherwise it's an excellent bike...

My GF has a 2009 F650GS, and I've ridden it a fair bit. Much lighter on all counts (actual and feel) than the TDM. Not a comfy a cruiser for long hauls, but more fun in turns probably due to light weight and wide handlebars. I have primo suspension on the TDM so it's pretty nice in turns too, but original suspension was too mushy for me (probably I'm too fat LOL).

I think the F800GS is a much more dirt worthy tourer than the 650 - just tougher build all around I think and more dirt oriented. I would take an R1200GS over either for touring, no contest, but that's me. In fact, as of right now I'm planning to buy a 2010 R1200GSA as I've lost confidence in my TDM for long haul 2 up riding, sad to say.

Go ahead and flame me.

Before you flick your lighter remember that over here we are relegated to 17 or 18 year old machines if we want a TDM.

Not for the first 17 years, but ran into serious problems on last trip in Sept. I posted extensively on that trip and the problems. Still have not figured out what's wrong, but honestly haven't tried that hard for last couple months. The truth is yeah, I broke down roadside and was damn glad to get moving again. Getting parts and service here for TDMs is tough - bike hasn't been sold in the US for 17 years, and it can take days under optimal conditions to get parts.

I'm out of trouble for the moment, the dealer had already taken a deposit on that bike(it was a very good buy) so that stopped me in my tracks. But the fuse has been lit now so I have no doubt something else will end up in the garage. If I get something very different to the TDM, a well setup DR650 or Tenere maybe.

R1200GS? No thanks, been burnt and let down by BMW boxers legendary 'reliability' and dealer support too many times now. So you won't get me on a new boxer ever again, besides that they are too porky for me, I prefer a lighter, narrower bike.
