Quality Road Repairs - hallrob1 - 12-03-2010
The view out of my office window is of the Hogarth Roundabout and Flyover on the A4 in Chiswick. For the 3rd time in 6 weeks a team of highly skilled operatives have repaired the crumbling road surface of the flyover. In each case this has involved a shovel full of cold tarmac and the back of a shovel. The second time included a team with Hi Viz jackets over their suits measuring the holes and taking pictures before the shovel full of Tarmac was applied. This time there is a group of 8 blokes walking up and down the flyover reviewing the work done by stamping on the recently applied tarmac.
No doubt the repair team have been given a target of potholes to fill in daily, but when do you think someone will notice it ain't working?
It's lucky the A4 doesn't carry a lot of traffic..................

Strange you should mention that...
The entrance to my friends housing estate has been full of pot hole (like one foot dia every 2 feet of road surface) for 3 months they have been out and "filled" them with shovels and whacked them down with back of the twice!!
Then finally after they appeared again last week they re-surfaced it with the same method but the added a layer of liquid tar and chippings on the top, Like thats really gona fix it!!!
It is funny cos they felt quite bad for me in my Rangy so god knows what they felt like for people with lesser cars [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif[/img]

Same here in the Glasgow area, I have seen the same quality repairs but done to full effect by doing them on a Sunday @ double time no doubt. Its not that I be-grudge the guys a bit of OT, but I'd have like to have seen value for money & have had a full repair done for the the double time. Oh & the latest from Glasgow is a pothole is not a pothole if it is under 4" or 100mm deep.

Another repair i've seen in Kent is a "temporary road surface" sign.

And yet you can sue your local council if there is a trip hazard in the pavement of more than 5mm (the ol' pound coin test).
Fascinates me how a minor pavement trip hazard hold more ground than a fecking hole in the road which could potentially cause loss of life.
Be nice if you could understand where the car tax / petrol tax / any other fooking tax was being spent...oh yer I remember - moats round politicians fecking houses.
I'll get back in me closet with my chill-pill.

Yeh, I been seeing a lot of 'Uneven surface' signs around too.

Assuming asphalt repair is the same there as here, the cooler temps require a mix called 'cold patch'.
Once it warms up a bit they will be able to grind the surface down and use 'hot patch' which is rolled by
(what I still call) a steam roller (diesel roller just doesn't sound right).
The 'smack with back of shovel' patches are only temp fixes till then.
Potholes in Pittsburgh are one of the reasons I was attracted to the TDM with it's long suspension travel.

I am not sure about Pensilvania or indeed the rest of the world, but in the UK it seems that the tarmac is not designed for snow or freezing. I was riding in A roads around Boxhill today and I was amazed by the damage left by the recent weather conditions. Meanwhile, in 2008, I saw Jct 12 to Jct11 of the M25 litterally melt with lorries digging trenches behind them. Is it that UK tarmac is meant for weather between 2 and 16 degree C (normal mini and recorded once only maxi temperature in England!!!!).
