All,
It might have been coincidental but when I followed the link in this thread

http://www.carpe-tdm.net/ipb/index.php?showtopic=17676

I got an alert on the computer. I have run since run AVG, Spybot and Windows Defender but have not come up with anything

.....however since then the computer has forgotten all its password settings, keeps prompting me for new passwords and wont allow me to change my Windows password.

Furthermore the Search function seems to be disabled so am unable to do any investigating.

Has anyone else had this problem or can make a suggestion?
Thanx
Sd

i'm not entirely sure the site the other topic links to is safe, maybe it was one of those programs warning you of that.

McAfee SiteAdvisor report for that site.

Obviously not infallible but a good guide.

Hi Rick, not trying to cause unwanted and maybe unwarrated angst but the alert itself was likely the culprit. If you clicked on anything other than the top right x (i,m assuming windows) then you may have introduced a trojan into the system. Apart from the various things you mention it may also stop you accessing "administrative tools" make "system restore" fail on every attempt and not allow "task manager" to run along with a host of other things all designed to stop you from dealing with it. Even if you take the hdd and put it in another system to run a virus scan (although it will likely have some success) it wont completely solve the issue. Good luck but if this is like others (Lou & Sandy) that have come across in last while then reinstall is only solution.
FIRST THING TO TRY. try a "system restore" to a point earlier than the trouble. If it works then problem solved.
cheers Graeme

if you are worried, head on over to one of the community driven anti-malware sites like http://www.malwareremoval.com and get your pc checked out

Not an expert advice here but just wanted to share my experience.
Got infected twice recently. got rid of first attack and found a new one last week. Went to the nice techy guys in a local shop who advised that for £100 they would re instal operating system. Told them I would think about it. Came back home, transfered pics and word/excel docs on an external hard drive. Switched off lap top and <b>reboot with my finger on F11</b>. It reinstalled the operating system and got me started on a fresh basis with the original firewall of Virgin media etc
I am sure I will miss a few shortcuts and links but it is amazing the amount of stuff that I do not appear to miss!
