Iam Completed. What Next? - mcbodge - 16-07-2010

As above, I've now passed the IAM test. I appreciate that I've still got things to learn and improve and wondered what the next stage might be.

Off-road (I've mountain biked for a long time) Enduro and track riding/supermoto are appealing, but expensive.

I'm not thinking of ROSPA as it strikes me as being very similar to IAM.

Cheers.

What's IAM?

No clue what your next test should be, but why not concentrate on what you like. For me, it would be riding a ridiculously too large enduro bike off road.

IAM -Institute of Advanced Motorists (Motorbike)

It's basically a higher standard than the compulsory riding/driving test based around the Police riding/driving manuals.

Cool.

Probably an unreasonable question, but could you say what the key things you learned from that course were?

How about Hare & Hounds or trail riding kinda activity ? Looks like a lorra fun and relatively non-life threatening.

Classic Trials perhaps ?

The emphasis is on safety through observation and riding defensively.

I was quite familiar with a lot of it beforehand, but it made me think more about my road positioning and they suggest covering the brakes more often than I did before.

-The other thing I learned was that Honda Pan-riding Police motorcycle examiners do like to you "make progress" and to overtake when there is the slightest whiff of an opportunity.

Ah, that's reassuring - I do all those all the time - particularly the last one.

I'd like to do all of those things. Aside from the costs, NW England is quite limited for off-road.

Do they ask you questions on the highway code at the end of the advanced test?

They can do. If the examiner considers that your riding didn't demonstrate a knowledge of the Highway Code then he will most likely ask questions about rules apertaining to what he considered sub standard riding. There are no hard and fast rules about questions.
Similarly, there are no slow manoevering tests in an IAM test, but if the examiner is concerned about you slow manouvering, he is quite at liberty to ask you to do a U turn.
